Several congregational issues exist concerning end of life in the African American community. The researcher hypothesized that women in group therapy will heal more rapidly than those in individual counseling.  The results from therapy sessions held over a period of six months supported the researcher's hypothesis.  The researcher concluded that pastoral counseling with a focus on reframing techniques is more successful in group therapy. Pastoral leadership is one of the fascinating challenges facing the 21st century church today. This thesis is not an exposition of the theology of congregations or of church ministry.  It attempts merely to describe and analyze what Dr. Eldin Villafañe refers to as 'the hermeneutical circle of social ethics.'  This systemic point of view involves three steps, which ask three basic questions: Clarification -- what is significant about this issue?  Conceptualization -- how do the Bible and precedent literature ground this project?  Confrontation -- what are the recommendations for further research?  In the introduction and chapter one, we do the first step by carefully looking at the social relevance present in our society that relates to the issue. In chapters two through four we carry out the second step by consulting other precedent research sources and doing theological and system reflection.  The third step involves developing a clear strategy consistent with a systems view of reality that relates to the first two steps.  The primary premise of this work is that long-term African American pastors and their congregations must plan for pastoral transition.  In so doing they ensure consistency and continuity of the overall ministry of God. The ministry in general and the ministry of preaching, pastoring and teaching. It offers the understanding of a true and divine call of God versus that of man himself. It investigates and suggests the ways in which God calls an individual and the ways in which God calls all believers, collectively. It also points out that when the term 'call to ministry' is brought up or spoken about in the African American church it is usually taken to mean one is called directly to the ministry of preaching or the ministry of pastoring.    Using the scripture, this project looks at the ways in which God called His prophets to show that God should always be involved in any type of call to the ministry. In these modern days we find it very easy to slip away from the divine call of God and allow the world, the church or human beings to do the calling themselves.    Within this paper we look at the characteristics of a call as well as at when a call perhaps is not a call. This thesis project seeks to manifest four broad results:         1.  To give a clearer understanding of the different segments of God's call;         2.  To show that the church of Jesus Christ will be enhanced with this better understanding of a true calling;         3.  To show that those who have the true calling of God will accept without hesitation; and         4. The program will be for nine weeks, meeting two hours per week, and will be taught by the writer of this paper, who is also the project leader. The project leader will combine the mechanics of biblical preaching with historical and cultural experiences of preaching in the African-American church. This project will produce a handbook for biblical preaching in the African-American church. The handbook will include all nine lessons, handouts, exercises, and an annotated bibliography. The handbook could be used to train associate ministers in their local church, a retreat, or in self-help. For this project, the handbook will be used to train associate preachers in the project leader's church during a nine-week program. Twelve experienced African-American clergy were selected to evaluate the manual using closed and open-ended questions.  The manual was rated as most effective in helping clergy discern the leading of God in conflict situations.  The manual also received high ratings in terms of its ability to help African-American clergy become more aware of how their values, beliefs, experiences, and history affect their ability to manage conflict.
