Young Black adults are not just looking for sound biblical preaching; rather, they are in search of sound biblical preaching that is both creative and grounded in practical wisdom. How can Emergent Church preaching inform Black preaching?  Four sermons by four preachers were analyzed using Haddon Robinson's analysis. Then three Black pastors of Richmond, Virginia, were interviewed to receive feedback. Through qualitative research and considering the ministries of two illustrious, great African-American preachers, the dissertation demonstrates that congregational involement in society increases church effectivness,regardless of whether the style of ministry is priestly, as with Dr. J.H. Jackson, or prophetic, as was that of Dr. Martain Luther King, Jr. The creation of an effective church in its fullness is, of course, a long-term assessment. The author demonstrates how musicality in homiletical composition and performance expands the cognitive-communicative 'bandwidth' of the preaching event, profoundly affecting a sermon's portability, memorability, and emotional power among listeners.  He explores what recent research in the interdisciplinary field of music cognition reveals about how and why musicality has these effects in oral communication.
