Lack of basic HIV/AIDS knowledge, risky behavior, religious conservatism, stigma, fear of status being exposed to other community members, and socioeconomic issues are some factors that contribute to the spread of HIV/AIDS within African-American populations. African Americans have close ties to the church, but the African American churches, until recently, have been slow to address HIV prevention. Several successful churches and faith based/public health collaborations were identified, with some limitations within these programs discussed, but too many are doing nothing. This study examines the community churches and reviews the empirical literature on faith-based HIV prevention programs among African American populations. By utilizing research and statistics, the writer sought to determine what the African American houses of worship are doing or not doing and what is needed going forward to help eradicate HIV/AIDS. What the writer discovered as a result of research, interviews, and workshops was that some of the clergy in the city and across the state of New Jersey were willing to start an HIV/AIDS ministry in their churches. The writer also documented the fact that there were those among the clergy willing to have someone come to their church once a quarter to speak on HIV/AIDS. Others were willing to put HIV/AIDS facts in their Sunday morning bulletins... Other pastors committed to providing pastoral care and counseling to those who were infected and affected. Some were willing to preach sermons on HIV/AIDS, place HIV/AIDS material in their houses of worship, and to have condom demonstration sessions set up for both males and females as part of the New Jersey Human Development Corporation's objective of education and prevention."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["5a6e4a36-5801-4bff-8e61-86d7489efb4a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799716708058923008,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T02:06:41.283Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T14:07:58Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:11:57Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"bcc59af2-ed38-4f22-8265-ff91d06eef77","accessControl_ssim":["a79bbf50-d28d-4f9f-84f2-f577b743cbf5"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The doors of the church are re-opened: identifying socio-theological clues for helping African American men 30-40 years old back to the church"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T14:07:57Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:34:26Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["7d8e9886-2be2-4155-add5-8fa9380b7e55"],"hasLease_ssim":["da49212f-6289-4b96-adfe-af7c1e919277"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Biblical Seminary in New York"],"advisor_tesim":["Horace O Russell"],"year_tesim":["2011"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Arthur R White"],"keyword_tesim":["Religious surveys"],"publisher_tesim":["Biblical Seminary in New York"],"subject_tesim":["African Americans","Church history","Church attendance","African American men"],"language_tesim":["English"],"alternative_title_tesim":["Doors of the church are re-opened: identifying socio-theological clues for helping African American men thirty to forty years-old back to the church"],"abstract_tesim":["African American men are in significant decline in the African American church. The researcher engaged the qualitative research design methods of descriptive survey questionnaires and group interviews in order to identify possible socio-theological reasons. The study included three groups of ten African American men: one group was African American men, 30-40 years old, who never attended church except for childhood exposures; another was a group of African American men, 30-40 years old, who attended church but stopped within the last ten years; and the third group was African American men who stayed in church over the last forty to fifty years. The results were analyzed by content and comparative content analysis as well as cross referenced with previous research results from church theologians and social science scholars. The socio-theological reasons identified are: a felt tension in his ontology related to stress on/from familial and ecclesiastical relationships and from the effect of urbanicity and region on his ontological, familial and ecclesiastical relationships. Additional church needs to be done on each of these socio-theological clues."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791129205741715456,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:12:00.881Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T12:58:50Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T03:11:20Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"f6c336e5-dd21-4c28-a173-31e3baf0c5f3","accessControl_ssim":["d627ee5a-869c-40df-a493-8fd3188fc87c"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Health and wholeness: building spiritual health and physical well being of seniors in the Centennial-Caroline Street United Methodist Church and neighboring communities"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T12:58:49Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T05:10:51Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["5d843d5e-2034-4cc2-9fd2-878538616f9b"],"hasLease_ssim":["2f0bc2a2-7661-485a-b58c-ad4bcbe94d5a"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Fred D Smith"],"year_tesim":["2009"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. To measure the African Americans' influence in the Evangelical Covenant Church in the areas of worship, preaching, and social action, three survey instruments were designed and implemented. The worship survey was conducted among fifteen worship leaders. This group was chosen because they represent a cross-section of the denomination at large. The preaching survey was distributed to twenty-eight covenant preachers. This group was chosen based on this writer's knowledge of their ministry setting. The social action survey was designed to assess the African American social action influence. This survey was administered to six associate superintendents, three directors of church planting, and four superintendents, representing the eleven conference regions that comprise the Evangelical Covenant Church. This group was chosen because these individuals overseer more than 760 churches in the United States and Canada. This study will show how that The African American Christian influence is responsible for an expanding array of ministries at larger gatherings of the ECC and in local congregations. The data findings of this report supports the assumption that preaching in local congregations has a social focus, and that many congregations are moving toward a new consciousness that lives out their faith in word and practice."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["b5eba5c2-141b-4673-9689-2f9720736859"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791128899608903680,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:07:08.929Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:52:10Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:19:42Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"cac8d2e3-e2c9-4bf0-9501-00fcc726af49","accessControl_ssim":["dd245056-def0-45f2-9833-bc9c81db7b11"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Enhancing the quality of life of African-American elderly, age sixty and older, with type II diabetes"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:52:09Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:57:41Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["d2692bda-279f-4d00-9f48-4728ab674ade"],"hasLease_ssim":["0fb36bfe-41da-4bf6-aa2d-fc4241251390"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["United Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Richard L Haid"],"year_tesim":["2006"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Patricia Ann Reiger"],"publisher_tesim":["United Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["African Americans","Medical care","Type 2 diabetes","Older people--Health and hygiene","Behavior therapy"],"language_tesim":["English"],"alternative_title_tesim":["Enhancing the quality of life of African-American elderly, age 60 and older, with type 2 diabetes"],"abstract_tesim":["The project objective was to educate Type II diabetic African-American seniors, age sixty and older, about the disease and increase their spiritual awareness of positive health practices in order to enhance their own quality of life.
