By examining the historical case of Briggs v. Elliott and the present-day situation of county schools, the author found schools are technically desegregated but are far from integrated. Ninety-eight percent of the students are African-American. In present day Summerton, separate still exists and equality remains just out of grasp. Data was collected from archives, surveys, interviews, and published reports. The context of this ministry model is a private school at Gravel Run Baptist Church in Dinwiddie, VA. Students were the same age, grade level, culture, and received similar courses of study. Student and parent interviews were also done to obtain deeper insight. After analyzing the results of these comparisons, it is clear that the role of the black church is essential to the assurance of successful education among African American youth."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["United Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["f0f9c284-37b6-440c-96ab-39e6509e82ee"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791127474463047680,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T06:44:29.805Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T07:58:16Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:53:15Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"39d7fe1e-ecf3-44b5-b47a-591afccfb2ef","accessControl_ssim":["3a9bc657-257b-422d-a293-7971947e7c87"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Advancing adult literacy: implications for economic and spiritual empowerment"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T07:58:15Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T23:48:34Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["6fea45a5-a490-48be-bac0-78acac514510"],"hasLease_ssim":["b1e355cc-6a8a-4f41-909b-ca917fa343a3"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["United Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Lawrence Wilkes"],"year_tesim":["2003"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Doris L Wingate"],"publisher_tesim":["United Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["African Americans--Education","Literacy","Berean Missionary Baptist Church (Brooklyn, NY)"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This final project was designed to address the problem of illiteracy hampering adults at Berean Missionary Baptist Church in Brooklyn, New York. There were six, ninety-minute sessions which focused on adult literacy, economic and spiritual empowerment. At the conclusion of the six-week sessions, all the adults demonstrated an increased ability in reading competency skills.
