The project tests an assumption that expectations of preaching are changing, primarily because of increasing educational attainments of laypersons in African American churches.  Results of these investigations, presented in 24 tables, show that the majority of college students and laypersons agree on many questions concerning the importance of preaching. The program offered one-on-one academic tutoring, motivational seminars, group discussions, and devotions based on biblical and theological themes: human beings created in the image of God; the covenant community and its responsibility for mutual nurturing; and, the mission and ministry of the church.  Pre- and post-intervention interviews were conducted.  A literature review relates to academic failure of African-American students. The design, implementation, and evaluation of the model were based on participatory action research methodology.
