He focused on strengthening these skills. After a pre and post survey, the researcher scheduled workshops for training and refreshing their skills in administration and organization. The researcher observed the participants in workshop settings and actual pastoral duties in their church. It is the belief of the researcher that his goals were accomplished with significant success. He realized that fifty percent of the participants showed improvement. In three stages of research (qualitative and quantitative) the author utilized a sample group, a control group and five small Bible study groups in one or more of the projects.  Data were gathered via profile questionnaires, personal spiritual status indices, and exit interviews.  A culturally and denominationally sensitive manual was developed and tested during the thesis project. Zion Church were active in the civil rights movement, but in recent years some have become concerned about the church's inability to address the needs of African-American families and communities. The author, an A.M.E. Zion member and pastor from 1987-2004, interviewed several African-American individuals who have been long active in the denomination. Based on his ministry experience, his study of African-American life and church history, and his interviews and interactions with laity and clergy, the author suggests that spiritual renewal is essential for a revival of A.M.E. The curriculum consisted of four spiritual practices: personal Bible study, consistent prayer, accountability, and sharing the Christian faith.  In twelve sessions, small groups received lectures, instructions, and training in which their spiritual growth was monitored by pre and post-test data.
