By reviewing the pietist roots of AA and noting the similarities between the twelve steps of AA and the faith/values implicit in liberation theology, it seeks to answer the question: what is the relationship between the Christian faith and the faith path of Alcoholics Anonymous? it suggests a common ground can be found in the path of the mystic, and concludes that AA is a legitimate expression of spirituality that can be accepted and trusted by anyone, including Christians."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["San Francisco Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["38714359-d032-4ed0-ae3f-cb82c8f65a92"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799716572560883712,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T02:04:32.062Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T22:09:12Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:31:12Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"6cfca464-7dba-478e-b848-25a341be134a","accessControl_ssim":["01b57908-ee4a-4aa8-a301-6e095ec0a645"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["A theological/biblical perspective of the twelve steps of Alcoholics Anonymous for implementation in ministry"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T22:09:11Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T01:19:30Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["7fa1861e-871f-4c40-a701-86cdcb44b261"],"hasLease_ssim":["3d5d9441-b95a-43e2-ae45-6a8ee50d4199"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Luther Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Ronald North"],"year_tesim":["1984"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Dennis C Morreim"],"publisher_tesim":["Luther Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Oxford movement","Alcoholics Anonymous","Church work","Pastoral theology","Psychology"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["Within the twelve steps of Alcoholics Anonymous there are numerous theological and biblical themes ingrained. Each of the steps is viewed in the thesis. Some of the theological/biblical themes that emerge are: pneumatology and faith, conversion/spiritual transformation, confession, reconciliation and forgiveness, justification by grace, sanctification, freedom, baptism, prayer and meditation, worship, spiritual awakening, evangelism, and discipleship. Research is gathered from existing data and excerpts from over 30 taped interviews with persons who are either recovering alcoholics or are CD counselors in a treatment program and have some affiliation with the Christian faith. They were asked as to any theological/biblical themes they perceived in the twelve steps. The intent of this thesis is to assist in the construction of bridges for communication and understanding between those in AA and those in the church. It begins with an overview of the Oxford Group Movement and its 8 points and explores the birth of AA looking specifically at the lives of the co-founders. The thesis concludes with examples of how an understanding of the 12 steps can be used in ministry."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791126641922015232,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T06:31:15.832Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T22:08:43Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:38:02Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"72f5d498-f3da-4dad-a6e8-bc65e9827530","accessControl_ssim":["df3fc124-9d84-4937-bc16-04ab8152a41b"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["A model for pastoral ministry to alcoholics"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T22:08:42Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T01:29:50Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["6c15490d-7262-4784-a8cd-7aebf405217c"],"hasLease_ssim":["54d36acc-a60d-4fbc-824a-2905ca9bfaa8"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Pittsburgh Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Gordon E Jackson"],"year_tesim":["1984"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Charles W Burrows"],"publisher_tesim":["Pittsburgh Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Alcoholism--Treatment","Alcohol","Chaplains, Hospital","Clergy--Office","Alcoholics Anonymous","Church work","Church group work"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The project focused upon devising a model of ministry centering upon the involvement and acceptability of the minister (and thus the Christian community) in the therapeutic and redemptive work being carried out in Alcoholics Anonymous.
