A review of the literature, with special emphasis on the spirituality of both AA and the population, tentatively concluded that adaptation was possible and advisable.  A manual was developed to introduce Hispanic pastoral agents to the tenets of AA and was piloted on a group of ten such ministers. The project is an intervention program of eight sessions which confronts the participants with their powerlessness. The underlying philosophy is Alcoholics Anonymous.  The methods used in the sessions are the pedagogy of shared praxis developed by Thomas Groome.  In terms of motivation the participants were asked to attend a support group for recovery. In accepting the third step the alcoholic states that he or she has made a decision 'to turn my life and will over to the care of God as I understand Him.'  The author tested the alcoholics with Gorsuch's Adjective Check List and Justice's Family and God Survey.  The data revealed that fourteen alcoholics out of the eighty-three tested had harsh God-images. The study approaches chemical addiction from the disease concept and then moves toward treatment through the spiritual discipline.  It defines and demonstrates this spiritual dimension. Some of the theological/biblical themes that emerge are: pneumatology and faith, conversion/spiritual transformation, confession, reconciliation and forgiveness, justification by grace, sanctification, freedom, baptism, prayer and meditation, worship, spiritual awakening, evangelism, and discipleship. Research is gathered from existing data and excerpts from over 30 taped interviews with persons who are either recovering alcoholics or are CD counselors in a treatment program and have some affiliation with the Christian faith. They were asked as to any theological/biblical themes they perceived in the twelve steps.  The intent of this thesis is to assist in the construction of bridges for communication and understanding between those in AA and those in the church. It begins with an overview of the Oxford Group Movement and its 8 points and explores the birth of AA looking specifically at the lives of the co-founders. The project was carried out in the setting of a general hospital based alcoholic rehabilitation program.  A group, led by a hospital chaplain, was set up to help patients work steps three, four, and five which are the spiritual core steps of Alcoholics Anonymous' twelve steps. Investigating alcoholism-complicated marriages and a control group of non-alcholic couples revealed that non-drinking marriages can experience superior marital satisfaction.  Two factors contributed to this satisfaction: each marriage partner took responsibility for his or her own growth and change and both mates shared a common spiritual life. Demonstrating that religious conversion and alcoholism recovery are similar, new church program models are urged as well as offered by the writer, which incorporate the 12 steps of AA/Al-Anon and the
