He concludes that functional substitutes are biblical and should be used to help the converts avoid syncretism.  The author did primary research into the beliefs and practices of the Dyaks in West Kalimantan, Indonesia.  He developed a manual of functional substitutes for use by rice farmers. The study uses the Old Testament to research terms as they related to spirit beings, their power, the practices associated with them, and the locating of key texts dealing with this topic. All of this material was used as the basis to define a biblical view of the spirit world.
