Many children and youth affected by trauma (violence, homelessness, abuse, neglect, and/or natural disaster) do not have an opportunity for personal expression in a safe and/or spiritual environment. The participant-observation method of research was used to create a model connecting the creative arts, the church and community groups that work with at-risk children and youth by making collaborative story quilts. The goal was to improve the quality of 'spiritual' life of the participants through a primary focus of 'spiritual painting' accompanied by prayer, meditation, and Bible story reading. Most of the participants suffered from either or both mental and physical disability. Even though normal communication and activity participation was somewhat limited, meaningful qualitative and quantitative assessments were obtained. Each exercise was based on one of the tasks of mourning that Wm Worden discussed in his book, Grief Counseling and Grief Therapy. These exercises were used in a group setting consisting of six single adult women. Two were widows, three were divorced and one had lost a brother to AIDS. It explores the HIV/AIDS-related teaching and ministry of the guru H. H. Ma Jaya Sati Bhagavati and her human care service organization the River Fund, both at Kashi Ashram in Sebastian, FL.  After providing her developmental biography, it summarizes her verbal, artistic, and kinesthetic forms of teaching.  She responds to HIV/AIDS with the Hindu concept of seva (service) that follows the Hindu religious path of Karma Yoga (action).  The project then examines the history and work of the River Fund, paying a particular focus to its de facto AIDS hospice, the River House.  The organization is unique in both the Hindu and American religious contexts.
