Drawing primarily from Christianity, Islam, and Secularism—with Buddhism providing structural support and Taoist thought influencing non-dualistic themes—this work defines faith as radical faithfulness to one’s own experience, marked by openness rather than absolute commitment. It argues that what is often called “truth” is merely faith that has been absolutized and idolized, undermining critical reflection. As both argument and example, this thesis introduces Embodied Disruption as a new method of research—one that refuses objectivity and instead centers lived experience, contextuality, and the disruptive impact of authenticity on dominant systems of meaning."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/downloads/4744fcb6-99b2-4a56-8068-d0b7cde977b5?file=thumbnail","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["admin_set/default-one_step_mediated_deposit-approving","admin_set/default-one_step_mediated_deposit-depositing","admin_set/default-one_step_mediated_deposit-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_ids_ssim":["4744fcb6-99b2-4a56-8068-d0b7cde977b5"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Master's Theses"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["a73e1c05-49cd-4a4b-93e7-8fd66694bdf5"],"file_set_ids_ssim":["4744fcb6-99b2-4a56-8068-d0b7cde977b5"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Theses and Dissertations"],"account_cname_tesim":["ctschicago.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"read_access_person_ssim":["yasmine.abou-el-kheir@ctschicago.edu"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"_version_":1836650062732591104,"timestamp":"2025-07-03T18:06:33.053Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T11:24:20Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:03:40Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"c4c1b0dd-034e-4e64-bc7e-ca49a1858f29","accessControl_ssim":["625d6205-f9c5-4d9e-ad06-52e42d74164e"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Real preaching: how a preacher's ethos shapes an authentic sermon"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T11:24:20Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:47:07Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["e7c008f2-269a-4505-9895-3d69622dfcaf"],"hasLease_ssim":["bcd77806-e13c-456f-9d55-de664c0b916f"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["McCormick Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Dianne Shields"],"year_tesim":["2007"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Douglas Allen Learned"],"publisher_tesim":["McCormick Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["National Presbyterian Church (Washington, DC)","Clergy--Office","Moral education","Authenticity (Philosophy)","Communication--Religious aspects--Christianity","Bible--Homiletic use","Preaching"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This thesis project, taken on in my role as the Executive Associate Pastor at the National Presbyterian Church in Washington, D.C., defines an authentic sermon as one in which listeners perceive dynamic congruence and continuity between four elements in preaching: 1) the Scripture passage, 2) the spoken message, 3) the character/personality of the preacher as presented in the sermon, 4) the character/personality of the preacher outside the sermon.
