This dissertation takes a thorough look at Romans 6:1-14 in order to prepare a homiletic outline from which a sermon series is developed. Paul's situation, purpose for writing, and flow of thought are analyzed, and the verses are then studied in the original language. Two phrases--'baptized into Christ' and 'died to sin'--are analyzed and discussed, surveying opinions throughout the history of the Church."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["b2ad2862-737d-4dde-8145-b9b6962ac5f3"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791131942808190976,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:55:31.151Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T17:24:55Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:34:13Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"24adbe32-39c4-483c-8f6a-21a9c6bbb1e4","accessControl_ssim":["936632f4-d604-43e7-a4a2-b18ee7159ead"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Corporate worship as improving baptism practices toward the new identity of God's people"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T17:24:54Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T23:12:52Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["3304c768-128b-48e7-89ac-aa70fd956df6"],"hasLease_ssim":["ae1fc270-847a-462a-bcd6-b84378729283"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Mark L Dalbey"],"year_tesim":["2016"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Luke W Brodine"],"publisher_tesim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Public worship","Baptism","Identity (Psychology)--Religious aspects--Christianity","Spiritual formation","Liturgics"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["Literature suggests that there is a fundamental connection between baptism and ongoing spiritual formation, and that pastors must recognize how practices impart understanding and shape identity. Biblical exegesis demonstrates that baptism, though multivalent, is the rite of entrance into the new community established by the redeeming work of Christ. An historical survey of the Reformed tradition, giving special attention to the work of John Calvin and the documents of the Westminster Assembly, concludes that the Reformed tradition has held to a highly developed baptismal theology, seeing the sacrament not as a mere symbol but as an instrumental means of grace. Baptismal theology has, however, become a source of debate and division, often focused on the question of 'baptismal regeneration.' This thesis asserts that the church can move beyond these debates by the renewal of a rich, instrumental baptismal theology--a renewal essential to the church's missional identity."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791126501771444224,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T06:29:02.174Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:04:29Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:40:34Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"92953e8a-257d-49d1-bc28-93bc28448b51","accessControl_ssim":["4bd6da09-e2e2-4631-ae57-99a7baa09a1a"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Living the baptismal life after the water and oil have dried: spiritual renewal in the parish through living one's baptismal covenant"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:04:28Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T02:25:37Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["42adc318-2beb-4292-928b-4b3fdd08ff8c"],"hasLease_ssim":["e6205053-683e-4781-929f-6360b2d245aa"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Pittsburgh Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Joseph J Allen"],"year_tesim":["2003"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Donald E Shadid"],"publisher_tesim":["Pittsburgh Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Church renewal","Baptism"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The thesis of this study is that if a group of Christians were to struggle daily to rediscover and 'live their baptismal covenant,' they would become a 'parochial apostolate' and spiritually impact their parish. Major divisions in the church have altered liturgical practices, especially the ritual observance of the sacraments of baptism and Eucharist. Early Christian worship reflected in the gospel of Luke and the Book of Acts reveals the religious experiences of the church in the last third of the first century. To the extent that they can be recovered, this project reveals how the sacramental practices of baptism and Eucharist were formative in the Luke/Acts community, how they evolved through twenty centuries of Christianity, and how they present a paradigm for modern Christian worship. This project addresses these issues through library research into the nature of Christian origins, ritual theory, and early Christian worship, coupled with reflections upon experiences in pastoral ministry within the United Methodist Church."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Claremont School of Theology"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["e7e2d3cb-fc51-4ba5-a7fd-d43f3f8c150b"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791132258624602112,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:00:32.337Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T03:47:54Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T02:22:42Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"40f89934-f2e2-4c25-8963-321fe1672d7f","accessControl_ssim":["8f7ed1a4-385b-4040-a1b4-d305de4fe576"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Rethinking the theology of discipleship in the Presbyterian Church (USA) for the 1990's, with implications for ministry by members"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T03:47:53Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T00:00:57Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["adf7dede-6cc2-4717-9390-a3b48d74bc2a"],"hasLease_ssim":["b2650d00-c15d-4643-a1c0-a4b4c1aa4405"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["San Francisco Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Howard L Rice"],"year_tesim":["1994"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Myron J Kaufman"],"publisher_tesim":["San Francisco Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A","Church work","Baptism","Christian life","Video tapes"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["Thesis: Ministry by members anchors members in a congregation and provides a context for personal spiritual growth.
