The completion of the project required extensive research in the fields of biblical discipleship couched in the context of Atkins, First Baptist Church. The project director studied the pirnciples from Scripture, read extensively from noted authors in the field of discipleship, considered various discipleship models, consulted experts, and sought the advice and assistance of other pastors. The discipleship director assembled a strategy leadership team from among the members of the church for the purpose of crafting a strategy for the context of First Baptist Church. The strategy was completed and presented to the church in a regular business session. Considering that many churches are declining or have plateaued, this study sought to discover practical, effective strategies and techniques that have contributed to overall church growth by baptism and conversion. The author asked what these practices were, how they were taught, and how they were modeled by the leadership. The author's research preceding the case study gives a review and foundation from the early church's teaching and experience in evangelism, discipleship, missions, pastoral leadership, and church growth to the present. A closer look was given at the causes and effects of little to no obedience and commitment to the Great Commission. Yet practical considerations (psychological, sociological, and ecclesial) contend even more compellingly for retention.  This project champions immersion as an almost absolute requirement for membership in Baptist churches. The author theorized that an in-depth study of the historical, exegetical and theological bases for Christian baptism would foster attitudinal changes among members of this congregation toward accepting as members candidates who had been immersed as believers in non-Baptist churches.  Surveys taken prior to and following the study series indicated attitudinal changes which enhanced the possibility of a major policy change. The project utilizes four research methods: survey, interview, pretest and posttest analysis, and a five session study on baptism.  Chapter one outlines the project's goals, the methodologies that assess these goals, and the setting for the project.  Chapter two contains a biblical and historical overview of the rite of baptism.  The third chapter looks at cultural trends and dynamics that affect Middleburg Baptist Church. Chapter four analyzes current baptismal beliefs and practices within the church.  Chapter five presents conclusions and evaluations.  The project concludes that believer's baptism by immersion best reflects the biblical, historical and theological history of Christian baptism.  It also affirms that this practice is not without exceptions. Church policies must reflect the congregation's understanding of baptism, without the extremes of radical exclusivism or treating the practice of baptism as
