Some 'moderate' Baptist churches have abandoned it as an absolute requirement for church membership.  Theoretical considerations (biblical, theological, ecumenical) underpin such abandonment. Yet practical considerations (psychological, sociological, and ecclesial) contend even more compellingly for retention.  This project champions immersion as an almost absolute requirement for membership in Baptist churches. The dissertation section of the study examines the Lukan perspective of Jesus' mission and ministry, the development of the Baptist movement with particular regard to the contribution by Spurgeon, Carey and Graham and the process of secularization with particular regard to the myth of the Australian secular society.  The project section examines in detail the growth and decline of twenty Baptist churches in the urban environment of Australia's largest industrial city.  The study revealed that personal religious belief in Australia remains strong but attachment to institutional religious bodies is in decline. Examination of the twenty Newcastle Baptist churches revealed that the majority of growth was borrowed from other churches with little evidence of growth as a result of mission activity. The author, therefore, sought for healthy models among growing churches in such settings and studied their common characteristics. Twenty-one possible growth dynamics were identified and eleven churches were studied to ascertain which of these dynamics were common to them and to what degree they might account for growth. Fifteen characteristics were found to contribute to the growth of churches and nine of these emerged as significant. The nature of the research was both literary and social, as the sources of Baptist spirituality were traced through church history and the emerging principles were applied within the program of a local church. Chapter 2 discusses the development of the biblical model of the one-flesh relationship of marriage.  Chapter 3 uses research in the behavioral sciences to focus on the development of the marriage enrichment movement and ministry.  Chapter 4 focuses on implementation of a marriage enrichment program in Victory Baptist Church.  The social research tools used to measure growth in a couple's primary coping system as a result of marriage enrichment are also discussed. Chapter 5 presents a summary and evaluation of the ministry project. Private couple/leader sessions and group sessions were used to implement this project. The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, M-BTI Relationship Report, Taylor-Johnson Temperament Analysis, and Prepare-Enrich Inventory were utilized throughout this project. The project observed the effects of a shared stewardship of lay and professional preachers in one rural Baptist congregation.  The professional preacher developed a ten-week curriculum for the training of lay preachers who then participated in the pulpit ministry of the congregation.  The effects of that shared stewardship on themselves, the professional preacher and the congregation were observed through the use of personal journals, surveys and interviews.
