The issue of leadership transition is becoming of more frequent concern within the local church. The continual growth in leadership turnover is causing traumatic experiences for not only the pastor in transition, but for the church congregation as well. While it is true that there exists a multitude of various resource guides, books, and strategies on the topic of leadership transition, many pastors and church congregations are still finding themselves unprepared and ill-equipped to endure a leadership transition of a pastor or ministerial leader without bearing some form of traumatic experience. The purpose of this project is to assist the local church body to be better prepared for a change in leadership by providing an effective leadership plan for a transition of leadership. The author of this paper interviewed ten senior pastors within the Tuckahoe Baptist Association to address the lack of intentional mentoring of associate ministers by senior pastors. Currently, there is no known model for training or mentoring associates ministers. Participants received training and encouragement to select their personal peer group during an initial orientation seminar and were equipped to engage their peer groups in twelve subsequent weekly meetings. This project focuses on the ordination practices of Cooperative Baptist Fellowship pastors in North Carolina and Virginia who locate themselves within this Baptist tradition. This report discovers which particular practices the pastors identified as meaningful in their ordination, most specifically which practices continue to sustain them in ministry today. Although this undertaking concentrates on ministers in the Middle District Baptist Association, the author realizes the same challenges exist among untrained clergy elsewhere. Leading ministers to reach an informed understanding of text as they investigate selected text through questions pertaining to the literal, the historical, and the contextual analysis of a passage contribute to informed understanding. Through an exegetical guide developed as a result of this project, ministers learn to analyze scriptures in a meaningful way that better prepares the preaching of the Gospel. Primary research in this project proves that untrained clergy can benefit from preparation in authorial intent. The project director utilized the research model described in the current New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary Doctor of Ministry Handbook. The project director researched a wide range of sources to gain a foundational understanding of bivocational pastoral ministry in the Morgan Baptist Association in Morgan County, Alabama. The project director used the material discovered through the research to develop a manual that may be used by churches in their search for and selection of a bivocational pastor. During the first phase of the project, its director researched the topic in order to provide content for a workshop intended to equip a selected group of Georgia Baptist pastors with revival preparation skills. The second phase included developing the workshop curriculum. The third phase was the implementation of the actual five-session workshop. Session 1 required two hours, and sessions 2 through 5 met for ninety minutes. This dissertation is specifically written for church leaders. It features a timely perspective on the current reality of Baptist faith and practice.
