Working within a group setting in a particular congregation, participants spent eight weeks engaging in blessing rituals and sharing their experiences through discussion. A theology of original blessing needs to be heard from the pulpit. A correlation exists between original blessing theology and redemptive social action. Twenty-four interviews and three small group discussions were conducted. This project proposes to stimulate theological thinking among pastoral caregivers on the nature and use of prayers, blessings, and rituals as instruments with the potential to heal and transform. From the perspective of a chaplain in a health care setting--Brooke Army Medical Center--care of the soul is an important element in the birthing, recovery, or dying of a patient. In any one of these situations prayers and blessings provide a vehicle for healing and transformation.
