The primary help laity can give is a ministry of listening presence.  Normal and abnormal mourning characteristics are described, knowledge of which is an essential component of training.  Included is a survey of a theological and scriptural basis for grief. The project was developed through a series of eight two-hour sessions which were designed to provide lay counselors with insight, information, and techniques from theology, psychology, and sociology.  To determine the effectiveness of such a program several methods of evaluation were used, including a pretest and posttest which were evaluated by a two-tailed t-test for correlated groups. Elderly Jewish people were interviewed to ascertain their coping with bereavement and to see whether there is any correlation between their religious practices and their ablilty to cope with loss. Simultaneously, bereavement support groups were organized for the elderly and were co-counseled by a rabbi and social worker from the Jewish family service. Theological reflections are provided for a theology of a bereavement.  A liturgy preparation guide and a parish support group are outlined.  Conclusions from pastoral interviews and presentations are cited.
