The minister significantly helps the bereaved in developing a model of grief management.  If established during the first days of grief, it can help mourners work through the grief process to a healthy conclusion.  This dissertation explains the nature of shock, its affect on family; discusses the value of funerals, and illustrates how the funeral message can be developed to aid the family in a therapeutic manner and be spiritually comforting. The reason for devising the titled plan and a description of the plan itself follow. Six classes (outlined in the dissertation) were held to teach caring skills to separate groups of church officers and lay members, using biblical 'caring' passages, psychological principles, understanding problems of the dying, the grief cycle, etc.  The writer's evaluation of the program, determined through individual interviews with each trainee after completion of the classes, as well as evaluation of the program's effect on the writer's own ministry are included. It describes the selection of training groups from four different Protestant churches of various sizes, with a total of forty-one participants, uses five instruments to gather evaluative data on the effects of the training on the participants, presents and evaluates the results, and draws conclusions.  The evaluative data includes opinion and feelings reported by the participants and their pastors, together with a pre and post questionnaire on attitudes and a report of the participants' involvement in such ministry in the year after training. The pre and post questionnaire showed several changes in the participants' understandings of how people respond to terminal illness, death, and grief, and in participants' attitudes about their own deaths. Chapter 1 provides the groundwork for the research project. Chapter 2 is a summary of general findings demonstrating how the traditional death rituals were based on three Tongan elements: traditional beliefs, love and respect, and obligation. Chapter 3 provides a brief history of the ancient Tongan society and the Tongan society after the influence of Christian missionaries. Chapter 4 shares theological beliefs regarding grief and loss from biblical times as well as traditional and current beliefs.  This is followed by a proposed new theology of death and grief. Chapter 5 provides the date and summary of questionnaire responses and an enrichment program as a model for the church's ministry.
