The method of study was by interviewing twelve members bereaved through shocking death using a research instrument, and assisted by studies on post-traumatic stress disorder. This study involved research into classic Jewish texts, findings in modern psychology and Protestant traditions, and the clinical experience of the author.  Jewish pastoral theology and care is based on sharing a cognitive empathy with the patient or mourner.  This is not restricted to clergy but is incumbent on every Jew.  The study also developed specific roles for the rabbi. The significance of this study for other congregations lies in the fact that it brings together a coalition of several ministry emphases--evangelism, missions, worship and Christian education--through which the cycle of compassion may find development and fruition.  It also moves immediately to settle down with the griever in an extended period of grief sharing and healing. By the analysis of interviews with those engaged ministerially with the OCF, the author illustrates the motivation, the preparation, and the support required for engagement in this ministry. The project was developed through a series of eight two-hour sessions which were designed to provide lay counselors with insight, information, and techniques from theology, psychology, and sociology.  To determine the effectiveness of such a program several methods of evaluation were used, including a pretest and posttest which were evaluated by a two-tailed t-test for correlated groups. Elderly Jewish people were interviewed to ascertain their coping with bereavement and to see whether there is any correlation between their religious practices and their ablilty to cope with loss. Simultaneously, bereavement support groups were organized for the elderly and were co-counseled by a rabbi and social worker from the Jewish family service.
