The English mystery cycles are seen, first as a predecessor to Shakespeare and second as a source of information about medieval culture. This author's process began with a review of this research by theater historians in the 1960s and 70s, then moved to analysis by medieval scholars of the last twenty years who are searching the mystery plays for archaeological evidence of custom and social change. This research reveals the medieval dramatist's transformation of the stories of scripture by setting the gospel narratives in medieval life. It identifies techniques including contemporary costumes, dialogue that deals with the actors' concerns and questions, and biblical characters transformed into contemporary figures. The lay Christians 'locally incarnated' the Bible by bringing human flesh to biblical story and taking their own place in salvation history. The identification of these plays as ludus (a Latin term related to the games of the arena) encouraged the establishment of a new 'field of play.' This project adapts the techniques of the medieval mystery plays to communicate the good news in the 21st century through contemporary mystery plays. The second stage of the research was to create 'fields of play' in the 21st century and encourage youth and adults to 'locally incarnate' the biblical story in their own lives. A reader's theater group was introduced to the techniques of the mystery plays, enjoyed discussing doctrine, and wrote their own mystery play. A congregation enlivened their worship, discovered drama gifts among their members, and grew in their appreciation of scripture and how it could speak to their lives. A youth arts camp had fun exploring scripture, a first for many of them, and improvised dialogue that dealt with their own issues and questions. This author concludes that using tableaux and improvised dialogue to explore biblical story encourages today's Christians to view their own lives through the lens of scripture. Playing in drama through these plays leads people into deeper exploration of what they believe about their own faith. The Scriptures remain a mystery to many people. They complain: The Bible is too hard to read; It is too long; It contains words I don't understand; I don't know the characters; It doesn't relate to my life; It is boring! These reactions make me think of reading Shakespeare and trying to understand it. The language of Shakespeare can be a barrier. The plot can be confusing. The length is daunting. The characters have peculiar names and get mixed up in our minds. Then we go to the theater and see it performed. It comes to life. It is exciting. It moves us. The words are embodied in the characters and we can see them move, speak, and interact with one another. We can follow the plot, see the action, and understand the story. It makes more sense. I want to know if preaching in first person can do the same for the Scriptures as the theater does for the play. Can it lift the biblical text off the printed page and make it come alive? Can it engage the congregation and make Scripture more accessible? I have explored preaching in first person. In this style of preaching, the preacher assumes the persona of one of the characters in the biblical text and delivers a sermon from the perspective of that biblical character. With a bit of costuming and a prop or two, the preacher embodies the biblical character in a play. I propose that this is incarnate preaching; that is, preaching that embodies the word and presents it in human form. They say that 'variety is the spice of life' and perhaps in the homiletic world preaching in first person is the 'spice' of sermon delivery. It can add variety to the normal fare of preaching. I experimented with this preaching style, as there is very little written on the subject in the field of homiletics, and I preached each of the assigned eight sermons in first person. 'From the garden to the crib' portrayed some significant events of salvation history from Adam and Eve to the nativity.  A questionnaire was administered before and after the pageant to the cast, a sampling of the audience and a religious education class of eighth graders. The author contends that the church is still locked into the literary-print era with sermons preached from prepared manuscripts.  First person biblical preaching portrays the gospel in a visual format suited to the electronic multi-media culture of television and computers.
