For preachers in Reformed circles who believe that application in preaching is a fundamental requirement, there is a key challenge: how to bring together biblical-theological method with practical exhortations to hearers in a sermon. In homiletics literature this challenge has been both acknowledged and described. The negative effects of this challenge have also been described. Furthermore, a significant amount of literature exists on how to generate application in sermons. Little literature exists however, that describes the nature of the problem itself and its possible causes. This study used a qualitative design using semi-structured interviews with five preachers from several denominations, varied preaching contexts and extensive experience who were committed to using a biblical-theological method in their sermon preparation and who knew the challenged outlined above as a practical reality. The literature review and constant-comparative analysis of the five interviews focused on narrative and ethics, Old Testament narrative and Christian ethics and the issues and limitations of biblical theological schemas.This study concluded that there are three primary sources of the challenge outlined above: the nature of Old Testament narrative itself as sophisticated literature, the limitations inherent in biblical theological schemas when applied to sophisticated literature, and the subjugation of the text by the preacher. The church in question is based near downtown Indianapolis.  It is diverse from the standpoint of ethnicity or race as well as socioeconomically, meaning a full spectrum of class, income and educational levels are represented.  It is also multigenerational, displaying an age range from high school students that come from the neighborhood without their parents to the elderly.  Nonetheless, there are under 100 adults that attend on a typical Sunday, meaning this variety of people interacts on a constant basis.The author delivered a fourteen-part series of teachings that went through the Bible from beginning to end.  Seven messages came from the Old Testament and seven more from the New.  These messages explored the themes of unity, diversity and our identity in Christ.  The author concurrently led three rounds of focus groups consisting of three groups each, which met in homes to discuss the above themes as they appear throughout the Bible.  Groups met before, during and after the teaching series.In the focus groups, the church displayed an appreciation for the theme of diversity as it appears in the Bible.  They seemed reluctant to speak in terms of the biblical metanarrative, though they saw the metanarrative as the foundation for their identity in Christ.  They accepted this as their primary personal identity and something they shared with one another.  Further, this congregation valued its own diversity, believing that it equipped them to relate and reach out to a greater variety of people. Throughout the Scriptures and history, there are multiple examples of those who were called to that challenging and lonely task.  This project developed a framework for preaching in the post-disaster context, based on analysis of sermons preached on the Sunday following the 2017 landfall of Hurricane Harvey in Texas and interviews of the pastors who preached those sermons.  This project also includes analysis and synthesis of data from surveys. The first intention is the creation of the nuptial hermeneutic for preaching. The second intention is to offer the nuptial hermeneutic to a group of priests in their second five years of ministry and evaluate it as a source of renewal.Chapter 1 explores the spousal relationship between husband and wife. Rooted in the nuptial vision of Pope St. John Paul II, it explores anthropology, asymmetrical reciprocity, marital love, the conjugal bond and good of the spouses, fruitfulness and responsible parenthood, and marital spirituality.Chapter 2 examines the spousal relationship between the priest and the Church. It provides an overview of the ministerial priesthood, a brief biblical examination of Jesus as Bridegroom, the relationship between the royal and ministerial participations in the priesthood of Christ, charity, the sacramental character and bond, fruitfulness, and spirituality.Chapter 3 proposes preaching as an expression of spousal love. It examines nuptiality as a theological category and presents the seven characteristics of the nuptial hermeneutic for preaching. These characteristics are utilized to explore the assembly, preacher, homily, and homiletical method. The chapter concludes with a strategy for preaching using the nuptial hermeneutic.Chapter 4 documents the development of the pastoral appropriation for this project. The method of presentation, a podcast series with fourteen episodes, is different from the original one-and-one-half-day workshop project design. This chapter recounts the reasons for modification, reviews the podcast format and presentation design, and offers a preliminary evaluation of this format.Chapter 5 details results from the project. It describes the participants, presents data collection points, and offers a summary of the results of the pastoral appropriation.
