Homiletical literature was studied and three methodologies were chosen as the basis for six sermons on texts from Romans.  The sermons were evaluated by a committee of lay people. The preacher who carefully and logically studies the vernacular text can produce effective biblical expositions even when the original languages cannot be consulted or effectively used.  This philosophy and methodology was taught and practiced in the Baptist Theological College of Sao Paulo, Brazil, for more than ten years. It uses recent scholarship which claims that Israel came into existence in the Highlands around 1250 BCE as a federation of heterogenous groups of marginalized people.  The author reconstructs both the person and the book of Amos by relying on works by Gottwald, Hopkins and Coote.  This sociological approach provides the preacher with new insights into the Biblical tradition and illuminates numerous connections of consequence for today's society. Three such theological presuppositions are isolated.  The five novels were read and discussed by a group of laypersons who had difficulty in perceiving Updike's theological intent.  The study concludes that while the works of Updike help provide meaning for preaching, they are no panacea for the preaching task. Using a year-long sermon series based on the Psalms, the thesis shows that one can meaningfully tell the whole story of Jesus Christ as our faith is modeled to us in the Apostles Creed. First, the New Testament was read chronologically beginning with the Book of Acts.  As a problem was discovered it was listed along with its scripture reference. The list was then arranged in tabular form to give an overview of major problems.  Second, the problems dealt with by each church were divided into chapters by the different churches.  Third, each problem was dealt with in order to learn the symptom(s), source(s), and solution as noted in scripture.  Homiletical aids were suggested for each problem in order to facilitate their use in preaching, teaching or counseling.  A valuable discovery was to note the symptoms and biblical solutions which can still be useful to local churches today.  It was also found that the local churches of today face most if not all of the same types of problems.
