The author focused on a particular congregation and ways in which small Bible study groups affected the cultural understanding of members.  She examined the complexities of culture and the significance of building relationships.  She worked with Paul Kimmel's definition of cultural understanding to examine the growth in understanding of persons utilizing a method called 'African Bible study.' The demise of Christendom and the effects on one local congregation for its ministry will be described, as well as the emergence of the missional paradigm. The principal idea used was John Wesley's admonition to 'earn all you can, save all you can, and give all you can.' This method can be applied to finances and all aspects of discipleship. The author used a four-week Bible study to examine this holistic method of stewardship. Using the participant/observer approach, all participants kept daily journals, answered a questionnaire, and weekly meetings were taped. This project found individuals feeling closer to God, gender response differences, and occasionally, typical Appalachian responses.
