Family structures change and are shaped by many factors including economics, politics, ideology, culture, and philosophy of society through the different historical periods in the Bible. This project uses historical criticism to study the changing structures of family through the biblical text. This project developed the “Spheres of Influence” hermeneutic as a tool for historical criticism to study the multiple factors which influence family organization. This fifteen-week course taught the general content of each book, the centrality of Christ in each book, and the proper distinction of Law and Gospel. The goal was to increase the participants’ desire to attend future Bible studies. Research tools included surveys and focus groups.
