Churches in suburban coastal contexts face a myriad of challenges, especially the lifestyle that comes with living in what are deemed to be ‘destination’ suburbs. This Project is an attempt to consider these challenges afresh against the biblical and theological backdrop of the church’s mission, in line with God’s mission in Scripture. It explores these challenges through the lens of the Bible, 1 Peter in particular, where Christians are very much ‘in exile’. The Project shows how an understanding of cultural movements and demographics, the importance of contextualization as a way of engaging people with the gospel, and how a shift in the church’s thinking towards adopting a ‘Third Place’ posture enables us to show people what real gospel-oriented community looks like. Ultimately it seeks to offer some ways forward along the lines of embracing an urban spirituality, helping people to see how the gospel can ‘reorder their disordered loves’ as they are pointed towards Jesus, and how more intentional training in discipleship and evangelism might equip congregations to be a faithful presence in their spheres of influence. This Project focused upon congregations along Sydney’s coastal fringe. Through interviews with ministers of Anglican churches at the ‘coalface’ and by utilizing qualitative data, the goal is to assist churches that have historically struggled in coastal contexts to formulate strategies enabling them to be missionally effective, through a renewed approach to ministry planning. It is hoped this planning may bring significant, gospel-based, long-term impact on individual church members and the churches, to bring blessing to their suburbs, gospel growth to churches, and glory to God."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Trinity Evangelical Divinity School"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["c654e922-76d0-4427-ac29-e286b7997781"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799720066766340096,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T03:00:04.396Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:12:46Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:27:00Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"80f9a03b-1470-402d-ac76-f3ee95a3a2a8","accessControl_ssim":["96b2bfc8-8818-4f4b-b077-0f02952f7f81"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Unbound On The Sabbath: Preaching About Sexual Abuse For Enlightenment Of Congregations And Hope For The Injured"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:12:45Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T01:56:11Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["89ca3186-18de-4582-8e04-185f8568f126"],"hasLease_ssim":["1059df23-1062-4002-8527-e1004241aa4b"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"discipline_tesim":["Homiletics"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Aquinas Institute of Theology"],"advisor_tesim":["Kay Northcutt D.Min."],"year_tesim":["2021"],"location_tesim":["United States"],"resource_type_tesim":["Thesis"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Gilson, Christine M."],"keyword_tesim":["Episcopalian Churches"],"publisher_tesim":["Aquinas Institute of Theology"],"subject_tesim":["Bible. Aquinas Institute of Theology, Saint Louis, Missouri, 2021. Sexual Abuse is neither new nor limited to the current century. Interest in the efficacy of preaching about sexual abuse to enlighten congregational listeners and to convey the healing message of the Gospel has evolved alongside church educational programs designed to prevent sexual abuse in churches. This thesis project helped a small group of preachers learn to preach about sexual abuse to their own congregations. It asks what the effects on listeners are when they hear such sermons and on preachers when they preach them. Chapter One provides background for preaching about sexual abuse, describes the reasons for the project, and discusses published resources that advocate for such preaching. The chapter concludes that such preaching is appropriate.Chapter Two integrates the scriptural, theological, and homiletical foundations of preaching. Both the healing texts of the Gospels, and some of the dark texts of sexual abuse and sexual violence are considered.Chapter Three considers sexual abuse in its the social and cultural environment. It helps preachers understand what is going on in the world outside the church so they can bridge from there to the world of the Gospel. It also describes ways in which churches and clergy have used scripture to harm victims of sexual abuse. Chapter Four describes the ministerial intervention by four preachers. It describes how the preachers were selected, how surveys for the preachers and their listeners were constructed and used, and the formation of congregation focus groups. Brief demographic data of the congregations involved and of the cities in which they were located was provided.Chapter Five describes the findings from the surveys, workshops, and focus groups, and interprets them in the context of the thesis project. It contains the author’s conclusions, observations of shortcomings in the research, and looks ahead to other possible research."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Aquinas Institute of Theology"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["416f1c5f-a1c7-4596-b214-83b6abadee9c"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130151903297536,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:27:03.211Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:12:14Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:48:20Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"0a4bff05-f957-4b33-aea9-c5889611583a","accessControl_ssim":["fcb5ce1c-9b4c-4d6c-b8a6-982522f28e51"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Equipping Christians with Critical Thinking Skills for the Purpose of Refuting Logical Fallacies Raised to Challenge the Biblical Worldview"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:12:13Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T22:24:30Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["c299ea84-a643-4984-9271-667fd0996345"],"hasLease_ssim":["f89894b8-65e0-49aa-aa59-87d6f6ebf3f6"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"discipline_tesim":["Missions and evangelism"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Travis Kerns Ph.D."],"year_tesim":["2021"],"location_tesim":["United States"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. This proposal advocates that recovery of ontological truths on the grounds of the interrelationship and interaction of Trinity. Current trends, such as the subordinate-authority-submission and egalitarian debate are critiqued in the light of the ontological reading of Scripture. The recovery of apostolicity as an ontological attribute of Godhead provides significant insight and cohesion to the ontological Trinitarian proposal. The significance of how God produces existentially and ontologically His life within the believer will define humanity in being, through relationship to Godhead. Religious practices both biblical and extra-biblical are examined and considered to better understand the extent of the paradigmatic shift that occurs in the person of Jesus Christ. This proposal develops a fuller understanding of the composition of a human being in the image of God in ontological terms in contrast to the orthodoxy’s dichotomist, trichotomist assertions. The perspective of states in which a human being exists, culminate in the identification of the ‘πνευματικός’ believer as the sole form of legitimate existence that is biblically normalized and warranted. The ontological significance will also redefine church according to the nature and Person of Godhead, thereby widely reforming structures and functions according to ontological truths and practices. This argumentation has reconnected Church to the Trinity ontologically and demonstrated that Church utterly depends upon Trinitarian substance and operation to exist according to divine intentions.Emerging from this exegesis is a model of church: ontological and apostolic, originated, [re]sourced, and incarnate from the nature of Trinity, demonstrating undeniably that it is impossible for the Church of divine intent to exist outside of the three persons of the Godhead, she has no life of her own. Church is this incarnation because her origins, means, and object are of Godhead’s nature, intra-relationship, and operation; whether microcosm or macrocosm, her ontological existence in apostolic Godhead is the defining criterion. The wall kept cultural threats out, but it alsokept a particular era of Christian culture in. While America later experienced the most rapidcultural upheavals in its history, fundamentalism remained largely unchanged within its walls, and the cultural chasm grew wider and wider. Some of the children of fundamentalism have nowleft these walls and are in search of something new. This project seeks to help these “travelers” on their journey. Twenty focus groups withself-identified “recovering fundamentalists” identified several patterns of personal pain alongwith lessons learned that could benefit others. Nine interviews with experienced pastors yieldedbest practices in shepherding travelers as they enter evangelical churches. These results werecollated to produce four key findings:1. Living with the disapproval and disappointment of fundamentalist parents aftertransitioning.2. Learning how to trust authority (of leaders and of the Bible) after being told to “justtrust” and not ask questions.3. Moving from a model of sanctification that is guilt-based to one that is grace-based.4. To address these conflicts the project centered upon transformational leadership phenomena, showing that a leadership development training program model for the future leaders must be seen as a priority in all the evangelical churches in Northern Nigeria. Such a model would be based on the researcher’s qualitative research study, which used thirty-six participants from evangelical church denominations as a case study. The study included both interviews and fieldwork-based research, in which the case studies of church leaders were analyzed to understand their perspectives on their leaders, as well as their impact on the community of faith and the culture from a biblical perspective. The project intends to motivate church leaders to learn to respond effectively to conflict resolution in their ministries. The author used narrative qualitative method to measure his results. The research was fruitful from the point that the correct biblical understanding, by large, changes the thinking and behavior of people. Before the teaching a majority of the participants had a limited understanding of the word 'go' in the Great Commission. They understood it as a suggestion rather than implied command to support the only command in Matthew 28:19 to 'make disciple.' Having the correct understanding shifted their thinking: going from point A - B had a greater purpose, which is to look for opportunities to 'make disciples.' Another misconception the participants was on evangelistic efforts. They had a very negative perception of what evangelism meant. The image they had was people holding 'repent or you will go to hell,' which left a bad taste in their mouth. This caused them to distance themselves from the work of the evangelist. The correct understanding of the word evangelism being a bearer of Good news, changed their thinking and behavior. The instructional program had positive results as it equipped people on how to share the gospel with others, creating confidence in the lives of the participants."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Denver Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["e7af129f-938f-4821-9463-dc6ded35d563"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791133423988899840,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:19:03.715Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T18:57:49Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:08:34Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"b6eef799-d729-4c92-b118-505525638ffc","accessControl_ssim":["8aba7442-9b04-44b5-858a-4e4e22d62891"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Indigenous African Demonic Deliverance and its Transference into Pentecostalism with Subsequent Refining: Ghana and its Diaspora as a Case Study"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T18:57:45Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:24:38Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["19d7e87a-69b9-44d1-aa34-35636948c9a0"],"hasLease_ssim":["43dda8af-7330-4029-83dc-8e1b0aa6b9c7"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Master of Arts"],"discipline_tesim":["Intercultural Studies"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Taylor Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Allan Effa Ph.D."],"year_tesim":["2015"],"location_tesim":["South Africa","Africa","Ghana","Canada"],"resource_type_tesim":["Other Terminal Project"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Duane Sterling Sims M.A."],"subject_tesim":["Bible. Christian parents are to impress God's commands on their children so the next generation might come to know, love, and serve Him (Deut 6:6-7). Jesus charges the church to make disciples, baptize, and teach others to obey his commands (Matt 28:19-20), yet, spiritual formation is not the target it should be for most Christian families and the American church. The literature reveals a general lack in understanding of the biblical worldview in Christians across generations, and thus, believers lack confidence and motivation to share God’s worldview with others. This study sought to evaluate the effectiveness of a workshop designed to address transformation in the comprehension, commitment, and intended conduct of participants to train others to the biblical worldview. Statistical analysis revealed participants changed in understanding, confidence, and motivation toward engaging in further growth to the biblical worldview and training others to it. Anecdotal information gathered from comments on the post-training survey provided additional evidence of the above, as well as qualitative evidence demonstrating participants changed in their commitment to share God’s truth with others and planned for future change in this “commissioned” area for Christ. The workshop effectively addressed the lack of intentionality about growing in and sharing the biblical worldview with others. The study showed adult Christians of all ages are more likely to engage in sharing the biblical worldview with others once they better understand the distinctives of the biblical worldview, gain confidence in their knowledge and abilities and are motivated to share it, and are equipped with models for training others to the biblical worldview."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Dallas Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["8322f611-a593-413a-8bcd-0011fba52dc7"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130793742958592,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:37:15.317Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":29,"label":"Unknown"},{"value":"D.Min.
