Mark","Peter, the Apostle, Saint
Traditionally the close connection between the origin of the Gospel of Mark and St. Peter was recognized in the Christian church, primarily due to Papias’ witness. In the first half of the 20th century, this view was challenged and almost rejected due to the developments of so-called form criticism. Recently, several scholars argued for the validity of Papias’ tradition and the importance of eyewitnesses’ testimony, specifically Peter’s, for the Gospel’s origin. Thus, Richard Bauckham’s recent Jesus and the Eyewitnesses produced an intensive discussion among scholars. Some asked the valid question: does the Gospel itself support the claim of its possible origin from Peter’s (and others’) eyewitness testimony? This thesis seeks to answer this question and look for Mark’s Gospel internal evidence, which may imply its connection to Peter. The methodology utilized is provided by narrative criticism. The main topic of the research is the exploration of the relationship between Mark’s narrator and Peter as his possible key witness. Three features of Mark’s narrative, namely the narrator’s ability, point of view, and focalization, are put at the center of the investigation. Exploring these features allows drawing conclusions regarding the relationship between the narrator, Peter, and other disciples, and the implied reader in the spheres of knowledge, perception, psychology, and ideology. The study of the narrator’s ability revealed that it is possible to see the narrator as one with limited knowledge and dependent on the disciples in the sphere of knowledge. As the disciples had privileged access to Jesus, they were able to know him deeply. Jesus himself had exceptional knowledge abilities and openly revealed this knowledge in front of his disciples. It is argued that the disciples can serve as a medium between Jesus and the narrator and transfer Jesus’ knowledge to the latter. The study of point of view demonstrated the ongoing ideological conflict between Jesus and the disciples. This conflict affected the relationship between Jesus and the disciples and was revealed in the difference between Jesus’ and the disciples’ understanding and perceiving things. The study of focalization showed that the narrator constantly emphasizes the disciples’ perception, and both the narrator and the implied reader share their perception to a great extent. However, they are invited to learn Jesus’ perception. The conflict between the disciples and Jesus, if not resolved, would prevent them from right interpretation of the Gospel events, which is important for witnessing. It was shown that the conflict was resolved at the final point of Peter’s presence in the Gospel (14:72). At this moment, he learned to see the Gospel story in Jesus’ way. Passages 1:29–39 and 14:72 make the Gospel’s inclusio. This structure invites the implied reader to enter the Gospel story alongside Peter and then revisit it with him again after his vision is healed. Peter’s level of awareness, the emphasis on his perception, his role in the disciples’ conflict with Jesus, and its resolution make him an excellent candidate not only for Mark’s narrator’s key witness but that of Mark himself. Moreover, due to his experience in 14:72, the Gospel may be seen as Peter’s confession and testimony.
https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/
https://www.covenantlibrary.org/etd/2024/Bychkov_Oleksandr_ThM_2024.pdf
["admin_set/default-default-approving","admin_set/default-default-depositing","admin_set/default-default-managing
deposited
open
Default Admin Set
rim.ir.atla.com
Etd
public","work_editor
admin
library@covenantseminary.edu
["Etd
1b136a19-0792-4124-8d89-4df687fc0cbb
ebeb95c2-6521-4385-83ed-b696064a7072
ckarpinski@atla.com
ckarpinski@atla.com
Come to the Table: The Lord's Supper as an Invitation to the Transformational Presence of Jesus
["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8
9daa3702-1fd4-48cb-b8eb-90c11e54d304
ac54dc26-4e60-49e2-bfa8-2ca80b12f54c
1
1
Atla RIM
Doctor of Ministry
Christian Spirituality
Pittsburgh Theological Seminary
Kenneth Woo Th.D.
2023
United States","Pennsylvania
D.Min. When these church planters were developed through the Multiplication Network’s recommended training program, the author desired to know to what extent can the new churches that were planted could be characterized as healthy congregations, kingdom communities, and reproducing organisms? The author decided to study churches that had matured for approximately four years in order to answer this question. Starting with the total population of church planters who were trained and started new churches in 2016-2017, the author chose a random sample of them. He then surveyed and interviewed not only a percentage of those church planters, but also members of their four-year-old churches.Factors were uncovered that often stood in the way of church realizing their full potential as healthy congregations, kingdom communities, and reproducing organisms, such as: antagonistic cultural forces in wider society and in the hearts of believers, navigating expectations with mother churches, getting derailed by daily pressures, and weak commitment. On the other hand, key beliefs, attitudes, and practices were unearthed that enabled some churches to become healthy congregations, kingdom communities, and—to a lesser extent—reproducing organisms, such as: seeing the local church as a family of faith, centering the life of the church on the Bible, praying for kingdom growth, desiring that non-believers receive salvation, serving sacrificially, and developing leadership potential in others.
https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/
["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing
deposited
Trinity Evangelical Divinity School
c654e922-76d0-4427-ac29-e286b7997781
open
Metadata Only
rim.ir.atla.com
Etd
public","work_editor
admin
ckarpinski@atla.com
["Etd
9b059ed2-2fc7-4ba5-b5e6-6cad5cd6995e
d103c4ff-cc93-4d31-9a9f-be4bacc5afb6
ckarpinski@atla.com
ckarpinski@atla.com
Finding Home in the Wilderness
["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8
b25dcfc0-ef0f-40e9-921f-bf8eb62f258a
500c0a21-bc33-4452-9493-ccc9064b5ab7
1
1
Atla RIM
Doctor of Ministry
Christian Spirituality
Pittsburgh Theological Seminary
Leanna Fuller Ph.D.","Tucker Ferda Ph.D.
2023
United States
D.Min. This commentary serves to create a door in the barrier between the Bible and lay people. The project creates a door so that people can enter into the world of the Bible. The customs, social life, religious practices, and other aspects of first century Palestine are explained in relation to the various pericopes in Mark. As people understand the world in which Jesus lived, they begin to understand the spiritual truths that Jesus was communicating. The project also creates a doorway that allows the Gospel to enter into the lives of people today. As people understand the spiritual truths of Jesus' ministry, they begin to see how these truths can enter into their own lives. Suddenly they discover that God's word is a living word. The commentary begins by using Mark 1:1 as the framework for organizing the introductory material to the Gospel as well as delineating the theological assumptions behind the commentary. The body of the commentary consists of twenty-two sections which contain the first eight chapters of Mark. the comments on each section of the Gospel are divided into two parts. The commentary is designed for lay people. It was created within the context of a congregational Bible study, and was tested by a panel of readers throughout the denomination. The approach of the commentary, and the language used within it, are designed for lay readership. Chapter 1 introduces the study and includes a thesis statement and an examination of the biographical factors, which influenced Scarborough’s life. This chapter includes Scarborough’s family background, call to ministry, education, pastoral experience, summary, and timeline. Chapter 2 examines Scarborough’s influence as general director of the Southern Baptist Convention’s Seventy-Five Million Campaign, which was a program intended to raise 75 million dollars over a five-year period from 1919-1924, to help finance Baptist efforts in missions, education, and other benevolent work. This chapter presents his influence in development and implementation of a strategy to execute the campaign. Chapter 3 examines Scarborough’s influence as a committee member of the Future Program Commission, which recommended adopting the Southern Baptist Convention’s Cooperative Program [CP] in 1925. This chapter presents his influence related to the theological convictions he maintained in the area of cooperation. Chapter 4 examines Scarborough’s influence as a member of the Baptist Faith & Message committee, which framed the first Southern Baptist convention-wide confession, entitled the Baptist Faith & Message in 1925. Prior to the 1925 confession, they used the New Hampshire Confession of Faith (1833) and the Abstract of Principles (1858). Chapter 5 provides a conclusion for the entire dissertation and centers on one of the most important concepts espoused by Scarborough during his lifetime. The concept of cooperation was redefined by Scarborough in a way for Southern Baptists that still marks a distinguishing feature of the denomination today. This chapter solidifies the thesis of the dissertation by an examination of how Scarborough utilized his influence to engineer a new direction for Southern Baptist through his efforts on the Seventy-Five Million Campaign, formation of the Cooperative Program and the Baptist Faith & Message.
https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/
["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing
deposited
Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary
b2ad2862-737d-4dde-8145-b9b6962ac5f3
open
Metadata Only
rim.ir.atla.com
Etd
public","work_editor
admin
ckarpinski@atla.com
["Etd
6700510d-d52c-46c2-9c58-9f45fa3cfabc
924fd128-9f69-4f9f-b64d-25956977bd30
ckarpinski@atla.com
ckarpinski@atla.com
Resting to Preach: A Biblical—Theological Evaluation of Rest Toward the Preparation of Sermons
["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8
d6a2276e-a7ae-492c-bd6c-c2409b91fd6a
a763e0cc-e153-48cf-a38f-3b1fc4d070b0
1
1
Atla RIM
Doctor of Ministry
Preaching
Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary
Matthew McKellar Ph.D.
2021
D.Min. The writer will explore the biblical basis for rest using six passages of Scripture. Genesis 2:1-3 and Exodus 20:8-11 will establish the importance of Sabbath rest. Psalm 19 will describe rest as one experiences nature. Matthew 11:25-30 will reveal the rest Jesus promises to those who are weak and heavy-laden. Mark 6:30-44 will develop the rest Jesus provides to His followers when they become overwhelmed with ministry. Hebrews 3:18-4:13 will explore the rest promised to the obedient. The writer will present research from scientific sources. Rest, Why You Get More Done When You Work Less by Alex Sooing-Kim Pang, The Wandering Mind by Michael Corbalis, In Praise of Slowness by Carl Honoré, and The Secret World of Sleep by Penelope Lewis are the sources that will reveal the value of sleep to the intellect and to human creativity. The writer will survey Christian authors to provide biblical insight into the value of sleep. These books are Saints’ Everlasting Rest by Richard Baxter, The Rest of God by Mark Buchanan, The Art of Rest by Adam Mabry, Subversive Sabbath by A. J. Swoboda, and The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry by John Mark Comer. These authors accentuate the necessity of rest for the follower of Jesus. The project’s goal is to help preachers improve their preaching by adding various forms of rest during their sermon-preparation process.
https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/
["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing
deposited
Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary
b2ad2862-737d-4dde-8145-b9b6962ac5f3
open
Metadata Only
rim.ir.atla.com
Etd
work_editor","public
admin
ckarpinski@atla.com
["Etd
20b17254-1a4a-45b6-a21e-1fa2a45f4382
1c16c0de-0779-4209-836b-b16781e75e14
ckarpinski@atla.com
ckarpinski@atla.com
Perfect Love Casts out Fear: Exploring the Effectiveness of a Person-Centered Disability Awareness Seminar in a Congregational Setting
["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8
76a36184-04ce-45c5-af59-aaf3d49868ea
d5ccc695-010a-4d67-a4c8-26ec3b5f3e63
1
1
Atla RIM
Doctor of Ministry
General Pastoral Ministry
Concordia Seminary (Saint Louis, MO)
Thomas J Egger Ph.D.
2021
South Dakota","United States
Dissertation
Text
Joshua H Jones
Church work with families","Bible. These barriers are also present in Christian congregations. However, many congregations express a godly desire to love people with disabilities and their families without these obstacles. The Old and New Testaments provide examples of how God’s people sought to love people with disabilities in their midst creatively and intentionally in response to God’s gracious actions, invitation, and command. Recent research in disability studies routinely highlight the necessity of being attentive to the uniqueness of each person with disabilities and his or her family. Recent work in the realm of sanctification also encourages Christians to practice active righteousness and vocation with an emphasis upon loving specific neighbors. In light of current research, this project attempted to better understand the effects of a person-centered disability awareness seminar about the pastor’s own child in a single congregation using a mixed methods approach. A pretest posttest design was used in the quantitative phase of the research utilizing the Multidimensional Attitudes Scale Toward Persons with Disabilities (MAS) to measure attitudes (N = 42). A focus group was used in the qualitative phase of research (N = 7). Results suggest a person-centered disability awareness seminar can be an effective way to improve attitudes and relational engagement in a congregational setting.
https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/
https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/
https://scholar.csl.edu/dmin/159/
["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing
deposited
Concordia Seminary (Saint Louis, MO)
c233458a-014a-46a2-aa34-c5309c85f7e6
open
Metadata Only
rim.ir.atla.com
Etd
public","work_editor
admin
ckarpinski@atla.com
["Etd
ed81437b-ac9d-43b8-8331-1dde1d90f2a5
b5e6efbd-7bb8-4e1e-9a60-efa2a5f84cac
ckarpinski@atla.com
ckarpinski@atla.com
Determining the Impact of Covenant-Group Discipleship on Current Church Dropout Rates of Students Graduating from High School
["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8
f6a3879f-6f46-4432-a408-434288287473
d05ad432-d585-41ee-8e96-7fc7c96500c4
1
1
Atla RIM
Doctor of Educational Ministry
Family Ministry
Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary
Richard Ross Ph.D.
2021
United States
D.Ed.Min. Youth ministry leaders must re-evaluate their approach and disciple-making strategy in their local church if they want to create lifelong followers of Jesus. In a recent study on church dropouts, Lifeway Research showed 66% of students stopped attending church after graduation. To further explore the findings from the 2017 Lifeway study, this ministry project examines the impact of intense biblical teaching and mentoring relationships within the context of covenant-group discipleship and its overall influence on church attendance of 116 high school seniors after graduation. The project director believed that students would demonstrate a minimum of a 15% decrease in the church dropout rate when compared to nationwide high school graduates who did not participate in an intentional covenant-group discipleship group.Chapter 1 introduces the framework and need for this ministry project. The first chapter communicates the research methodology, purpose, and goals as well.Chapter 2 of the ministry project presents biblical and theological support for disciple-making in the context of covenant-group discipleship. This ministry project purposed to demonstrate that covenant-group discipleship is firmly grounded in God’s Word and therefore a viable solution to create lifelong disciples of Christ in youth ministry. In Chapter 3 of this project, the project director examines the current state of youth ministry, an overview of the Gen Z generation, and multiple studies indicating what may impact the current dropout rate of students from the local church. Finally, the project director explores the discipleship models of historical and contemporary figures.Chapter 4 explores the findings from this ministry project in detail. The findings from this ministry project overwhelmingly support the project director’s initial proposition of church retention after graduation.Chapter 5 evaluates the many elements and facets of the ministry project. The ministry project’s purpose, its corresponding goals, as well as its strengths and weaknesses are assessed. Lastly, both theological and personal reflections that were discovered as a result of the completion of this ministry project are considered and presented.
https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/
["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing
deposited
Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary
b2ad2862-737d-4dde-8145-b9b6962ac5f3
open
Metadata Only
rim.ir.atla.com
Etd
public","work_editor
admin
ckarpinski@atla.com
D.Min.
