Alletzhauser interviewed active United methodists in local church ministries as a participant observer using open-ended and narrative therapy questions. The results demonstrate how stories of Support circulate in local churches despite denominational policies and statements of Non-support. Lesbian, gay, and bisexual persons have been placed into the role of the bearer of sexual shame and have been the object of projection, discrimination, and prejudice.  Through the use of structural family therapy, combined with concepts from various family systems theories and object relations theory, homophobia in the church is analyzed.  This analysis leads to a theology and psychology of liberation, empowering lesbian/gay/bisexual and heterosexual persons to change the structures of homophobia into structures of liberation.  Through 15 in-depth interviews this project relates the experiences of persons in a liberation worshipping community in New Hampshire.
