This project identifies certain stresses that precipitate burnout within Pentecostal churches.  Theological and empirical data lead to the conclusion that certain modalities have been established within the ministry and church that are counterintuitive to the physical and spiritual welfare of the pastor. It is an attempt to provide information about stress, and to emphasize coping skills. After preliminary research, the writer found that role stress, conflict stress, and culture stress were three key stressors in the lives of Valley pastors. An eight hour seminar on stress in ministry was scheduled.  The two-fold goal of increasing awareness of stress and increasing coping efficacy was emphasized in the seminar.  After the seminar, six pastors were monitored over a six-week period to determine benefits received from the seminar experience. In today's economy a full-time priest serving one altar places severe demands on these congregations.  As small churches over-invest financially in clergy deployment they also over-invest emotionally.  An atmosphere is created where clergy are expected to over-function to match the high level of investment.  The stresses caused by this phenomena are causing clergy 'burn-out' while these small cures are becoming harder to fill.  The project/thesis explores the connection between financial over-investment and the emotional expectations to over-function. Ministry burnout can be prevented.  Through research and field application, this project provides cognitive information leading to learned coping skills that will help ministers to avoid abandonment and ministry, family and faith.  A cognitive map of burnout and recovery describes sources and processes of harmful stress and motivational stress. Using a qualitative method, caregivers shared their stories answering the question: What were the experiences of 'burnout' which contributed to developing codependent moments in your caregiving relations? Codependent moments are defined as those moments when the caregiver is disabled by the issues shared by the person seeking care. The purpose of the survey was to determine the level of stress and burnout in the pastors' lives.  The survey revealed that generally pastors are very satisfied with their calling as pastors, but they also revealed the pastors' strong proclivity to ignore wife and family, and to deny any possible warning signs of stress and burnout. Four categories of brokenness--divisiveness, arrogance, idolatry, and hardness of heart--gleaned through exegesis of Paul's letters to the Corinthians and the Ephesians are explored.  Five ways of knowing for women--'silence,' as well as 'received,' 'procedural,' 'subjective,' and 'constructivist' knowing--attributed to Mary Belenky and her research group are considered.  The methodology of the praxis circle, including the movements of formation, event, self-interest, theological assumptions, social science assumptions, and new praxis, is employed.  Ten stories based on interviews are presented. A perception-test instrument was used to measure perceived burnout among eighty SDA pastors in southern California. Demographic data was also gathered to compare various factors' effects on burnout perception.  Six pastors were invited to a three-day 'spiritual disciplines retreat.' Follow-up testing of both 'retreatants' and 'non-retreatants' was compared to test whether such an intervention had reduced perceived burnout among the test group. Survey results showed markedly low degrees of burnout among the total Jesuit clergy and lay personnel.  Because some psychiatrists have lately treated burnout as an addiction, they found natural medical means ineffective for curing burnout. The pastors living within the boundaries of the Presbytery of Northern New York completed a test and a questionnaire was submitted to executive presbyters in the Synod of the Northeast.  The author ascertained that burn-out and stress was indeed a problem.  Three specific projects were initiated for evaluation and testing.  They included a retreat, pastoral supervision model and pastoral/clergy support group.
