I believe Calvin’s construction of the church better serves God’s people by placing skilled teachers of doctrine into church leadership, thereby letting pastors focus on the care of souls. The first chapter presents a cursory overview of the topic. The second chapter provides two important historical overviews: a biography of John Calvin and a history of European theological education. In addition, a brief portrait of higher education—Calvin’s Academy of Geneva—will be provided to observe his doctor of the church in practice. The third chapter will expound on Calvin’s main literary works that discuss the doctor of the Church: Romans 12:4-8, Draft of Ecclesiastical Ordinances, 1 Corinthians 12:28-31, Ephesians 4:11-14, Acts 13:1-3, and his Institutes of the Christian Religion (1559). The final chapter will explore three American Presbyterian denominations—Presbyterian Church (United States of America), Orthodox Presbyterian Church, and Presbyterian Church in America. Their various books of church order will be reviewed, along with their respective institutions of higher education—Princeton Theological Seminary, Westminster Theological Seminary, and Covenant Theological Seminary. Finally, I will offer a review and set of recommendations for these denominations to adopt."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"related_url_tesim":["https://www.covenantlibrary.org/etd/2022/Hess_Austin_MABTS_2022.pdf"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["admin_set/default-default-approving","admin_set/default-default-depositing","admin_set/default-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Default Admin Set"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["library@covenantseminary.edu"],"_version_":1817352985899958272,"timestamp":"2024-12-02T18:07:46.496Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T18:10:24Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:37:59Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"f8d29693-48d3-4ec0-bf0f-7905abfba177","accessControl_ssim":["58311088-fc47-4679-9c1d-dd2456575392"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Reconsidering Calvin Bringing the Arts into Reformed Worship"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T18:10:24Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T05:14:06Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["b252fbdd-c4c4-49c4-9bbb-6af62d5bce35"],"hasLease_ssim":["9779ef05-e7df-4236-a6aa-c818c318e301"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Deborah Sokolove"],"year_tesim":["2018"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. Biblical exegesis demonstrates that baptism, though multivalent, is the rite of entrance into the new community established by the redeeming work of Christ. An historical survey of the Reformed tradition, giving special attention to the work of John Calvin and the documents of the Westminster Assembly, concludes that the Reformed tradition has held to a highly developed baptismal theology, seeing the sacrament not as a mere symbol but as an instrumental means of grace. Baptismal theology has, however, become a source of debate and division, often focused on the question of 'baptismal regeneration.' This thesis asserts that the church can move beyond these debates by the renewal of a rich, instrumental baptismal theology--a renewal essential to the church's missional identity."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791126501771444224,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T06:29:02.174Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:44:06Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:02:34Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"78ee34c9-e7f4-423a-a58b-12be87cf53ad","accessControl_ssim":["78631b3a-3b4b-4983-a72c-f9a21d43630a"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Repentance as regeneration: the practice of mutual invitation as missional formation"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:44:05Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T01:41:14Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["7b356d22-915b-4c34-8f85-f443dbc174a5"],"hasLease_ssim":["185b0772-102a-47e0-97a8-fa26ea821784"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["David Forney"],"year_tesim":["2005"],"location_tesim":["United States"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Mary Rebecca Burton"],"keyword_tesim":["Congregations--Internal conflict"],"publisher_tesim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Congregations","Communication--Religious aspects--Christianity","Presbyterian Church","Law, Eric H F","Calvin, Jean, 1509-1564","Theology"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The question of redemptive communication in mediating difficult issues and conflict has been an issue in Presbyterian congregations. The research discloses that Calvin's understanding of repentance as change connects with Law's process since it seeks to help leaders and congregations engage in conflict and a changing environment in a healthy manner."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["b5eba5c2-141b-4673-9689-2f9720736859"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791128615207829504,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:02:37.703Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T06:26:46Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:36:33Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"4ac9e346-f032-4696-998a-d44604f76d59","accessControl_ssim":["3e081661-2cf1-423e-9580-8699e0689ccd"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Growing in grace: learning from the insights of John Calvin"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T06:26:44Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T00:19:30Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["0b3eb396-84df-4bae-acb5-1b52df972a76"],"hasLease_ssim":["5a8dfe97-733a-4eb1-9250-0ca2e9872cc2"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Richard F Lovelace"],"year_tesim":["1996"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["William J Maxwell"],"publisher_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Christian education of adults","Calvin, Jean, 1509-1564","Theology"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This project presents teachings of the sixteenth-century reformer John Calvin, combined with an inductive Bible study, in a format useful for participants in small study and sharing groups.
