In addition to a supportive process the project sought to address the spiritual dimensions of the cancer experience.  Three models for reflection were tested: Jesus' Paschal Mystery, the religious practice of pilgrimage and the stations of the cross.  Using surveys, as well as discussion and observation over six weeks, data show an improvement in how the women saw their experience. The intervention was based on peer patient narratives and was presented in video format for six consecutive weeks as either spiritually oriented or as factually oriented.  The spiritual transformation scale (STS) score of the spiritually oriented narrative group was significantly greater than the factually oriented narrative group. Data was collected through observation, interviews, and images using the ethnographic method. The study addressed the emotional, psychosocial, and spiritual needs of children and adolescents with cancer as well as the historical ad contemporary uses of the labyrinth. Five cancer patients were enrolled in the project with their assent and the consent of their parents. To support the goal of each couple developing a new functional homeostasis in their marital and family relationships, the model of ministry included: MD's psychosocial screening; brief pastoral contacts introducing the ministry; a psychosocial/spiritual 'holding environment' to process major fears/concerns about body image, sexual function/roles; and, emphasis on community support. Although the efficacy of the pastoral care interventions is perhaps best judged in the context of each couple's relationship, data from pre-counseling and evaluation questionnaires was analyzed. All five males and six females indicated on follow-up questionnaires that sharing their emotions during the treatment of cervical cancer with a counselor was 'very important' or 'moderately important.' This project involves twelve weeks of training sessions that include: lectures, group dynamics, and personal visitation.  The effectiveness of the training is measured through the administration of pretraining and posttraining tests (Semantic Differential and Knowledge Questionnaires).  The test scores are compared to a control group which is similar to the training group in number of persons, gender, and age.
