Serving others in the intensity of the trauma and long-term recovery of a disaster can take a physical, mental, spiritual, and emotional toll on caregivers. A retreat was established for spiritual caregivers to be part of a supportive community of others with similar experience of disaster caregiving. Spiritual caregivers were given the opportunity to explore their own experiences and feelings in a comfortable, safe environment and inviting format. The training further reduced participants' fear of death and increased beneficial styles and types of death acceptance as measured by the Death Attitude Profile-Revised (DAP-R). The goal was to find factors that contribute to the after-care worker's tenure. Four case studies focused on questions related to burnout, secondary trauma, support and training. Significant findings revealed issues in categories of motivation, burnout, secondary traumatic stress, vicarious victimization, compassion fatigue, self-care, support and training. After-care workers universally reported significant burnout and secondary trauma. Training, support and healthy self-care measures were found to be a contributing factor of longevity. At times their role is not clearly defined. As a result some care groups function like a social group without spiritual direction. This research project addresses the training needs of care group leaders by developing a training program that attends to the main functions of a care group leader. The threefold office of Christ as prophet, priest, and king is used as a model to guide the development of the training program. The goals of the project were evaluated by experts using an assessment tool. The evaluation results demonstrate significant agreement by the evaluators that the workbook accomplished the resource goals. The most prominent finding indicates strong agreement that the resource could help caregivers learn the cause and effect relationship between beliefs, thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. This study explores the importance of symbols expressed in dreams, what may appear as nonsensical spontaneous comments, and uncharacteristic behaviors of patients at the end of life. The workshops are designed to inform and develop skills interpreting symbols to enhanced palliative care. Staff reports indicate the calming benefits that interpreting symbols extend to the dying patient. The author used a qualitative research method for gathering data. Personal interviews from pastors faced with this dilemma, plus questionnaires and interviews from his family, churches and communities, where he pastored with his disabled wife, played a significant role in his research. As well, an archival research into the effects and challenges facing caregivers and their families added to his insights.
