Part one analyzes the influence of the rite's theological anthropology and asceticism in ministering to the sick. Part two describes the five-session, in-service learning workshop. The author sets forth underlying theological assumptions and looks at the catechumenate in its present form by journeying with one group of catechumens and sponsors from the precatechumenate in January 1982 to the celebration of Confirmation on Easter Sunday, April 1983.  Examined closely are the various stages of the RCIA: precatechumenate, catechumenate, special preparation (Lent) and mystagogy. Monthly teaching sessions, catechumen group meetings, sponsor catechumen sessions, service projects, liturgical rites, and Christian Living Days are treated.  The role and ministry of catechumens, sponsors, catechists, liturgical ministers, and catechumenate team are considered in turn.
