They were asked what they found to be difficult and enriching during internship. Data gained through questionnaires, journal exercises, and interviews provided a narrative and anecdotal commentary of their experiences.  Mutual accountability, ethical responsibility, and the nature of the intern-supervisor relationship surfaced as areas of concern. On-site observations and in-depth interviews of thirteen non-ordained pastors and some of their significant parishioners in five Midwestern dioceses who pioneered these appointments form the basis of this study.  Among the conclusions: most parishes, after an initial period of stressful change, adopted well to this new form of pastoring. After presenting the historical development of the Order and defining the charism of its founder, the thesis explores the faith development and spirituality of young adult males who comprise college councils. Contemporary ecclesiastical documents, particularly Vatican II's 'Decree on the laity,' are employed to provide a theological background and understanding of laity, their mission and need for empowerment. In order to test this thesis, Roman Catholic neophytes and 243 coordinators were surveyed.  Theological reflection on the responses to the survey and subsequent interviews held with people who are implementing the Order of Christian Initiation of Adults point up the responsibility that parish leaders have to engender the communities of empowerment similar to the small communities of the early church. The evolution demonstrates a marked shift in meaning from the experience of the Apostles to the use of the terms in today's context.  The shifts are positive because they once again call the laity and the church community to mission and evangelization.  This project focuses especially on the role of the RCIA sponsor. Sponsors serve as examples of lay persons recognizing the call to mission and evangelization.  They are a group in need of formation in mission and evangelization.  The educational design for RCIA sponsors focuses on the role of the lay person and the community in mission and evangelization, and also provides an opportunity for the sponsors to experience the tie between their actions on behalf of the candidates as well as the action of the community. Assuming that some uses are better than others, the project seeks indices for evaluating materials, personnel and programs related to the lectionary. A form of factor analysis is judged the most appropriate method for discovering the indices.  An interpretive perspective is illuminated by a contrast between two distinct theological currents within contemporary Catholicism.  The lectionary is situated within one current, as are its appropriate religious education uses.  Data gathered in sixty-one interviews are reported and interpreted.
