Through a program based upon the gestalt cycle of experience and conducted in a university context, alienated Catholics were encouraged to redefine their religious symbols. Recent literature raises questions about indissolubility and the nature of premarital counseling for second nuptials. Regarding indissolubility, the Catholic priest must be pastoral and ecclesial.  Regarding pastoral preparation for second nuptials, the priest integrates a number of roles. Unique concerns in second nuptials are grief, guilt, building a new family, personal limitations of bride and groom, and spirituality in remarriage. A questionnaire was distributed to parents, young adults, and catechists to elicit their understanding of reconciliation in their daily lives and their understanding and attitude toward the Sacrament of Reconciliation.  A separate questionnaire was distributed to priests to elicit their experiences of the sacrament with adults and children.  The experiences of the adults and catechists revealed that many have not had an updating since their childhood and basically see the sacrament as a time just to confess their wrong doings.  For many it was a negative, fear-filled experience.  The priests' responses revealed that the new form of the sacrament is not being used and they prefer face to face experiences over and against Form One. Since usual prayer forms are not helpful during times of emotional breakdown, the author designed a course in prayer, using both verbal and non-verbal modalities.  Using a phenomenological methodology, the study demonstrates that by expressing pain in a community of co-sufferers, the participants were able to discover new images of God, and new ways of praying while experiencing acute suffering. Despite the vast energy poured into the renewal of Roman Catholic liturgy, this project indicates that many Catholics still do not find liturgical celebration to be an adequate expression of their search for, and expression of, God.  Study groups were devised to raise sacramental consciousness.  A comparison of responses made on reflection sheets before and after sessions indicates that the sacramental process had become overshadowed by sacramental events; and for many these events had become empty rituals. The true self seeks loving relationships; the false self avoids them out of fear.  Church teachings and discipline often promotes the false self.
