The author served on the pastoral care staff of St John's Regional Medical Center while he developed the material in the project.  The project will be used as material for teaching an internship program for students interested in the work of a hospital chaplain.  The students will work in the hospital with the author.  Subjects considered in the project are: the hospital chaplain, the patient, the patient's family, and the medical staff. The four phases of the project involved designing a program that met the discovered needs of the hospital, enlisting volunteer clergy, training volunteer clergy, and implementing the program utilizing trained volunteer clergy.  Demographic studies of the community and patient surveys determined the design of the program. Personal enlistment of ministers was done and a training program was designed to introduce the participants to basic pastoral care in the hospital setting.
