The four phases of the project involved designing a program that met the discovered needs of the hospital, enlisting volunteer clergy, training volunteer clergy, and implementing the program utilizing trained volunteer clergy.  Demographic studies of the community and patient surveys determined the design of the program. Personal enlistment of ministers was done and a training program was designed to introduce the participants to basic pastoral care in the hospital setting. Thirty cancer patients were interviewed using questionnaires: one gathered personal background and medical information and the other assessed spiritual well-being.  The findings indicated that religious beliefs were significant.  Daily prayer was associated with spiritual well-being, but religious affiliation and church attendance were not. Using a survey of local clergy and church members, this project assesses the perceived need for, value of, and role expectations of hospital chaplains at the Malden Hospital, Malden, Massachusetts, and the willingness of local churches to support chaplaincy services. It gives a working definition of healthy spirituality.  Four case studies address the significance of individual values, guilt, anger, and grief as they relate to anxiety and pain.  The theological rationale for the project is based on Paul Tillich's threefold description of existential anxiety. The study indicates that chronic pain is more often the result of life history than medical history. In this situation the following problems ensue: the hospital as an institution is not significantly involved in the role and function of its chaplaincy, and the staff chaplains are confused as to their purpose, philosophy, and procedures.  In addition, other hospital employees, the departments in which they serve, and the physicians who practice are confused or not aware of the service of the chaplaincy.  This inadequacy resulted in less effective patient care.  The place of the chaplains as team members in the hospital, along with being companions with employees and doctors, was the desired end of the project.
