From the perspective of a chaplain in a health care setting--Brooke Army Medical Center--care of the soul is an important element in the birthing, recovery, or dying of a patient. In any one of these situations prayers and blessings provide a vehicle for healing and transformation. Employing a literature review, archival research, oral histories, and a survey questionnaire, the project uncovered a history punctuated with tensions. United Baptist patients expect evangelical pastoral support; they are satisfied with their experience of HBHC. Neither individuals nor congregations will accept a fully ecumenical chaplaincy. The project recommends that HBHC be incorporated under a board that can secure funding under its own foundation. This project examines a successful chaplaincy training program at Community Medical Center in Scranton, Pennsylvania, which educated 40 community volunteers in a 12-week course over a three-year period. These trained volunteers enabled the hospital to continue providing 24-hour pastoral care. The project employed the Death Anxiety Scale (Nehrke modification) in a pretest and posttest format to measure changes in the level of fear and anxiety in these patients. Evaluation found that 75 percent of the patients experienced relief of fear and anxiety, while fear and anxiety increased in 19 percent. The project evaluated the effectiveness of the CPE program at Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Long Beach, California, considering benefits--spiritual, educational, and financial--for each group involved in the medical center. By using CPE students in its medical centers the Department of Veterans Affairs could provide an effective spiritual ministry at relatively little cost to the institution.  The project administered a questionnaire to 110 patients, chaplains, medical center employees, and CPE students, seeking to measure perceived benefits of a CPE program. Legislation applying to Medicare-certified hospices required them to employ a 'pastoral or other counselor.'  This stipulation is often overlooked.  1987 research found that generally the social worker fulfills the counseling function.  A survey of Massachusetts Medicare-certified hospices conducted for this project found similarly.  The problem was investigated by the survey, literature review, interview with AAPC's Executive Director, and critique by peer pastoral counselors. Films that were pastoral in theme were the primary focus of this research.  A document was completed which addressed the theological and practical considerations of utilizng media in church educational programs, as well as the impact of media upon US culture and churches.  The project then addressed the pastoral role the author fulfills within the Churches of Christ while functioning as a hospital chaplain.  The development of a 39-minute video directed towards enhancing laity's Christian response to the seriously ill was the final aspect of the project.  Resources were utilized to help focus upon script writing, patient interviews, and securing visual supplemental materials. After these components were completed, the editing process began, blending all of these components plus utilizing decision-making skills of the author's hospital experiences and the resource persons' editing expertise.
