A theology of suffering and ministry developed. The new component included materials to support parents of autistic and other special needs children in their spiritual lives. The parents' response to written materials and participation in the blog, 'Continuing the conversation' was followed and evaluated. The blog reached a broader population than anticipated and its work focused on the themes of hospitality, parenting and children's spiritual development. Churches and ministers, ignorant and inexperienced in the mission to the handicapped, need practical guidance.  But, first of all, Christians must see the disabled as persons of dignity and individual worth, as they have been created in the image of God.  The churches should recognize the problems of the disabled and take leadership in eliminating the prejudices and unfairnesses prevailing in society.  The subject of this paper was limited to mentally retarded children. Part 1 presents the general understanding of mentally retarded children; part 2 explores the biblical resources related to the education for mentally retarded children, the development of their spiritual characters and the church's sharing with them.  In part 3 these investigations are incorporated into a practical program of church education. The term disability relates to individuals who are unable to function to their fullest capacity due to various physical, emotional, social, or intellectual problems.  This study explores and documents the experiences of families with children in the New Jersey metropolitan area, their involvement with clery and religious congregations, and, more specifically, the experience of parents with a child newly identified with a disability and the role in which clergy and congregations play in that process. The elements of this report include a discussion of current literature and resources on the subject; a theological review of the history of disabilities within the Christian faith and the socioeconomic environment; a description of the research survey tool utilized to gather specific evidence related to the topic; a discussioon of the results gained through the application of this research tool; and an analysis of implications that exist within the current framework of the Christian church.
