Understanding these views can help Chinese pastors to preach God's word effectively and to educate their congregations about the significance of expository preaching in pulpit ministry.  This study employed a qualitative design, using semi-structured interviews. The review of literature and analysis of the eight interviews focused on three key areas of preaching that revealed the views of the lay leaders on what constituted biblical preaching. These areas of focus were: the views of lay leaders on preaching in light of their various church experiences in different countries, the views of lay leaders on preaching in relation to other contexts of teaching the Bible in the church, and the views of lay leaders on expository preaching. This study revealed that male and female of Chinese lay leaders share similar views of preaching. Through the change of evangelical ethos and attitude, the EFC has a pressing opportunity to present the gospel to an audience who believes in a system of social cohesiveness dependent upon personal virtue and self-control. For Confucius and the Confucian Chinese, society's harmony relies upon the appropriate behavior (li) of each individual within the social hierarchy. Most of them had very good jobs in the workplace and were in the leadership positions when they accepted the call. From quitting their jobs or taking early retirement, the process of becoming full-time ministers is a great challenge. Once they became full time ministers, the challenge of pastoring at churches is even greater. This dissertation discusses these challenges and how to overcome them. Consequently, a description of the Chinese pastoral leadership role in missions mobilization was constructed, through integrating the findings from interviewing the research participants with a comparative study of some biblical characters in both Old and New Testaments, the teaching of Christ on servant leadership, and the Chinese traditional paradigm of paternal headship.
