Church leaders who are on the cutting edge of ministry must learn to accept and deal with conflict in a positive manner.  This is the thesis of the project.  An initial theology of conflict is developed and is compared with secular theories of conflict currently having influence.  A rationale for the material is included as well as test results from the first group to use the manual. The paper looks at the denomination's congregational and presbyterial roots and its present structure in which regions have responsibility for authorizing ordinations.  The paper surveys and analyzes current practices of the 36 regions and makes recommendations to enhance the role of congregations in the process. The research involved a Likert-type questionnaire, open-ended comments and personal interviews (39) completed by a combined total of 204 persons, 60 pastors and 144 lay persons.  The study demonstrates that the pastoral relations committees are an effective means of support and feedback for ministry and serve, secondarily, but helpfully, in the area of personnel matters.  The pastoral relations committees theological framework relies heavily upon 'unconditional acceptance'.  The author recommends further theological development focused on the stewardship of gifts. Disciples' theology on pastoral visitation was reviewed, and a survey of Disciples ministers in Kansas was made.  A strategy for pastoral visitation in the pastors' studies was developed in notebook form and field-tested. He used personal visits, interviews and questionnaires with five of the original Shalom Congregations in the program. The study featured a historical sketch, recent controversy, CC-CC views, various opportunities in ministry found in the army chaplaincy.  A conclusion was followed by an appendix which surveyed 1,000 Protestant army chaplains reference their attitude toward the army chaplaincy.  The survey indicated that chaplains minister to families almost as much as their civilian counterparts.
