The practice of catechetical preaching is now in decline, both in quality and quantity.Chapter Two deals with the problems of catechetical preaching. It is often repetitious from year to year and therefore boring. Preachers sometimes brings theological presuppositions to their preaching that are different from the views expressed by the Heidelberg Catechism. Chapter Three gives us reasons why catechetical preaching can still be useful and relevant. The Heidelberg Catechism provides us with a useful framework of thought and confession. Its emphasis on the promises of God can be a very effective antidote to legalism and cold orthodoxy. Chapter Four studies and critiques the approaches to catechetical preaching of Peter Y. DeJong, the Dutch Pietists, Heinrich Ott, Eugene Heideman, Shinji Masuda, and Paul Calvin Zylstra.Chapter Five explores ways in which the Heidelberg Catechism can be preached with Scripture texts so that catechetical preaching will be, at the same time, valid and faithful exegesis of the chosen text and useful exposition of the Heidelberg Catechism.A method is discussed by which a non-traditional congregation can be introduced to catechetical preaching and the Catechism presented as a reminder of what the Bible teaches."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["c24f9e0f-f5f0-45a3-b7f1-6a406c6902fb"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791135620338286592,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:53:58.317Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:47:49Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:50:57Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"1cbeea7c-7be2-4a20-9da3-1ac1cf310cbf","accessControl_ssim":["ae6acb27-a578-4975-a0b8-bbde966de03d"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Teacher care : a basic handbook for church educators"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:47:48Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T22:58:40Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["ada70fd1-6f8f-4e7a-8981-20a25a19c965"],"hasLease_ssim":["157b94e6-63c8-4749-af6b-afbd6ab8153c"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["1989"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. The appendices include deacons' conference constitutions and ecclesiastical documents impacting the work of conference leaders and deacons."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Western Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["910240dd-6bfb-49cb-ab06-1b8de036aac8"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791132273485021184,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:00:46.508Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T00:28:49Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:42:33Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"f851c1e7-ae09-4f67-a66e-472512f36abf","accessControl_ssim":["e39e1e62-8134-4bc7-8a0f-f61d12e65aee"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["'Disciple: Becoming Disciples Through Bible Study'; an evaluation of its effect on the biblical knowledge and aptitude of participants"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T00:28:49Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T05:13:25Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["edf9f632-9712-4a36-ae2d-b06906ad7194"],"hasLease_ssim":["17107437-04cb-4c48-9b2f-f963baa5202c"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Perkins School of Theology"],"advisor_tesim":["Richard T Murray"],"year_tesim":["1989"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["David W Griffin"],"publisher_tesim":["Perkins School of Theology Southern Methodist University"],"subject_tesim":["Education--Curricula","Christian life--Biblical teaching","Church renewal--Methodist Church","United Methodist Church","Christian education"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The United Methodist Church stands in need of renewal. An examination of the curriculum known as 'Disciple: Becoming Disciples Through Bible Study' suggested that this Bible study would address many church renewal concerns. The practicum was designed as an evaluation of Disciple which would be accomplished through its use in the candidate's parish and a series of twenty-seven interviews. The first key finding is that Disciple is a Bible study which should be used in every local church. A second key learning is that community is essential to the formation of new disciples and the reformation of old disciples."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Perkins School of Theology"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["9d359def-dc0f-4ac7-a978-8df771bc0984"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791127356119711744,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T06:42:36.944Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T00:17:58Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:47:22Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"620d3050-6635-4d75-8c04-07617954fef0","accessControl_ssim":["12f8b63b-1ddd-4d18-a443-b32b6add5c29"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Design and implementation of youth and adult Sunday school teacher training in the use of the Bible book study curriculum"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T00:17:57Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T01:00:11Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["54136f37-7873-47dd-81d9-c7c7803c255c"],"hasLease_ssim":["abf501d5-5c9d-4f33-a29d-a06248fcafa2"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Robert E Johnson"],"year_tesim":["1989"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Verne Wickliffe"],"publisher_tesim":["Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Education--Curricula","Self-esteem","Sunday school teachers","Christian education"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This project presents a design for a teaching method for the Bible book study curriculum, implemented through teacher training. The methodology can provide teachers effective ways to address student needs and encourage participation in the learning process. Improved teachers' self-esteem will result from new skill and pastoral support. A three part methodology was designed that allowed teachers freedom to construct lesson plans for their specific class. Three one-hour training sessions introduced teachers to the methodology; thirteen weeks of on-the-job training completed the training period. Teachers were able effectively to address student needs, encourage participation, and improve their self-esteem. However, the training was of more importance than the methodology."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["dacf5c07-78c8-4937-a01a-26cd044f9625"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791135208589754368,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:47:25.642Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T00:16:29Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T03:13:25Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"ac9ec44e-152f-468a-9e50-a74d4afddaf7","accessControl_ssim":["1ff426cd-e1f6-4741-be5a-5ee73a8505cb"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["A preaching and teaching study guide for use with personnel deployed in the United States Naval Service"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T00:16:28Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:07:03Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["b6928d5f-e646-4fc8-aafa-38074d1abf5a"],"hasLease_ssim":["5eb50ae6-72ca-4365-bb42-4e3c4c99cad4"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["San Francisco Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["William P Dillon"],"year_tesim":["1989"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Daniel H Ottaviano"],"keyword_tesim":["Relation (Theology)"],"publisher_tesim":["San Francisco Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Fosdick, Harry Emerson, 1878-1969","Armed Forces (United States)","Preaching","Christian education","Military chaplains","Jackson, Edgar N.
