Its aim is to help the spiritually curious, newcomers, and regular church attenders develop a more informed understanding of the Christian faith, particularly through the lens of the Reformed Church in America (RCA). My research for this paper began at Marble Collegiate Church (RCA) in Manhattan—a large, urban church context. In the summer of 2011, I began my ministry as a solo pastor at The Community Reformed Church (CRC) at Manhasset, NY, a small, suburban congregation just outside of New York City. The Explorer’s Handbook and formative process that comprise my doctoral work both emerge from and serve both types of settings. Its appeal is wide; its scope is broad."],"license_tesim":["https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/"],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"related_url_tesim":["https://repository.westernsem.edu/xmlui/handle/1866/1495"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["c24f9e0f-f5f0-45a3-b7f1-6a406c6902fb"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791135494137970688,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:51:57.963Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:40:22Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:52:28Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"5706f648-ece1-441e-a3e8-e5e95dfe0370","accessControl_ssim":["6930d3d6-5d86-4727-8817-168a61d71216"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Hispanic Pentecostal ministry in greater Grand Rapids : balancing calling and training toward a sustainable and healthy ministry"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:40:21Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T00:41:18Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["91381ca3-829c-4cac-95c6-62a2b84b758f"],"hasLease_ssim":["df04f9b2-1b67-498d-bb5f-5484ed7c13cb"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Alvin Padilla Ph.D."],"year_tesim":["2020"],"location_tesim":["Michigan"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. While they offer a welcoming and familiar community to migrating families, there seems to be a disconnect with the context in which they are serving. Pastors and leaders of these immigrant congregations face real challenges: from limitations with the English language to lack of true access to resources and opportunities, from disconnection with local government officials and other agencies to the necessary skill sets to properly engage and impact their communities. It has been my observation throughout the years involved with Hispanic Pentecostal congregations in Greater Grand Rapids, Michigan, the tremendous amount of work devoted to reaching out and ministering to those migrating to our communities from over twenty Spanish speaking countries of the American continent. If these pastors of the fastest-growing religious tradition and the fastest-growing minority group in Western Michigan are making such an impact for the kingdom, I imagine the greater work they’d be able to do when they become better equipped and trained on unfamiliar yet significant educational programs.I have interviewed 10 Hispanic Pentecostal pastors that participated in a two-year certificate program and discovered how this training enhanced their ministries, prepared them to serve their communities better, and experienced the power of collaborative efforts. Their confidence level raised and positioned them to embrace other opportunities and seek continued education.I have concluded that when barriers are removed and true access is available, Hispanic Pentecostal pastors will embrace education because they understand the power of knowledge and training. Also, institutions should rethink curriculums, methodologies, and hospitality to better adapt to these pastors’ needs and to make it possible for them to stay engaged. Both academic institutions and Hispanic Pentecostal leaders ought to move more toward each other."],"license_tesim":["https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/"],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"related_url_tesim":["https://repository.westernsem.edu/xmlui/handle/1866/9327"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["c24f9e0f-f5f0-45a3-b7f1-6a406c6902fb"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791135528401240065,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:52:30.639Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:35:39Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:57:50Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"58059576-92d6-4229-8037-686a19f087fb","accessControl_ssim":["95e6776c-3f6f-4c44-aab6-d27db88e782d"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Using Springshare LibWizard as an Information Literacy Module to Improve the Research Skills of Students at Mississippi College"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:35:38Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T00:42:52Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["8e933932-9ecd-4140-b238-872d174e3a16"],"hasLease_ssim":["eb21544d-ee93-45cf-b2f7-0659ff2ba7c2"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Educational Ministry"],"discipline_tesim":["Educational Leadership"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Joseph Craig Kubic D.Ed.Min."],"year_tesim":["2022"],"location_tesim":["Mississippi"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Ed.Min. At times, depression results from exhaustion, anxiety, worry, and many bottled-up issues in people’s lives. People are depressed because they are unfulfilled in their careers, marital life, education, and plans. Unconfessed sin and wickedness of hearts can be the root cause of some depressive moods. When daily challenges become overwhelming and frustrating, people are spiritually drained and discouraged. What is needed for any individual struggling with a depressive mood is the Word of God through biblical counseling. Biblical counselors offer a compassionate heart and practical help through the biblical principles applied to the counselee’s life and situation.Christians (church members) are not immune from depression because it is real and can be overcome and conquered through reliance on the Holy Spirit and appropriate biblical principles. Biblical counselors should always keep in mind a holistic perspective of human nature. God created human beings holistically – body, spirit, and soul. When one part suffers, every other part suffers with it. Psychology, philosophy, and psychoanalysis (or psychotherapy) are human theories and philosophies that can only last for a short time. The Word of God (Scripture) is authentic, inspired, inerrant, sufficient, and authoritative for counseling tasks and is superior to anything the world’s wisdom offers. The Scripture has the power to change life and turn around situations. Regardless of the latest scientific discovery, research, and methodology, medical professionals still believe, according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), that ‘mental disorders’ including depression fall into such “diagnostic criteria” with a collection of symptoms known as syndromes. A syndrome is simply a collection of symptoms that a person is experiencing."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["b2ad2862-737d-4dde-8145-b9b6962ac5f3"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791133223559888896,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:15:52.571Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:29:30Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:08:17Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"adb0801a-51ef-4418-b983-9f8a42ba220c","accessControl_ssim":["8623e05f-fc88-4722-bdd0-1ed9c86923f3"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Equipping Parents To Teach Apologetics To Their Elementary-Age Children At Broadmoor Baptist Church In Shreveport, Louisiana"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:29:29Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:09:03Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["4973d705-1f0d-4595-af31-bc8031e0a8af"],"hasLease_ssim":["dd81ce60-0108-4c6d-a579-e394f71f3178"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Travis Dickinson Ph.D."],"year_tesim":["2021"],"resource_type_tesim":["Dissertation"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Jarred Pellegrin"],"subject_tesim":["Education--Curricula","Parent and child--Religious aspects","Children--Religious life","Church work with children","Christian life","Christian education"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["“But the Spirit explicitly says that in later times some will fall away from the faith, paying attention to deceitful spirits and doctrines of demons,” 1 Timothy 4:1. This is a clear warning that the enemy is working to deceive and cause people in the church to fall away. What if the church could better equip the laity to address the areas often used for the deceptive purposes talked about in this verse? This dissertation addresses the issue of people walking away from the church, particularly people who have grown up in the church and walked away after high school. I argue that in order to keep these individuals from walking away from their faith, they need to be equipped to better understand and rationally defend that faith through apologetic training. While other projects have had a similar goal and targeted teens, this project is targeted at parents with a goal of equipping them with the tools necessary to teach core apologetic concepts to their early elementary age students. This dissertation seeks to lay a foundation on which to build an apologetic and instill a Christocentric world view into students at the earliest possible age. Then the desire is for the parents to partner with the church to build a strong structure of apologetics and understanding well before they would be tempted to walk away from their faith."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["b2ad2862-737d-4dde-8145-b9b6962ac5f3"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791132748928253952,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:08:19.927Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:28:29Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:12:27Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"d5974060-a701-464d-b43e-4403936edff5","accessControl_ssim":["235fd007-817a-4cf3-a2fc-970a492f1a8e"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Establishing a Biblical Marriage Mentorship Program at First Baptist Church in Midlothian, TX"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:28:28Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:14:15Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["048dd01e-703f-4140-947a-bd9cd534318c"],"hasLease_ssim":["4619be7a-8901-47c9-90ad-b03c07a0ce4e"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Educational Ministry"],"discipline_tesim":["Family Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Shane Parker Ph.D.","Jonathan Williams Ph.D."],"year_tesim":["2021"],"location_tesim":["United States"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Ed.Min. Chapter 1 introduces the problem, need, and purpose of the project. The thesis states that first-year married couples will show more commitment to the teachings of Scripture as a foundation to a lifetime of marriage after being mentored in a curriculum centered on those Scriptures. Chapter 2 includes the biblical and theological foundations for developing a marriage mentor curriculum that will help first-year married couples understand why God established marriage. The theology of marriage, mentorship, and Christian education are treated in the chapter. This chapter also includes a review of related literature. Chapter 3 details the writer’s goals, limitations, and plan for his project. The researcher will support the thesis statement and describe the process by which it was addressed through the project.Chapter 4 explains in detail the writer’s formation of his workshop material. This chapter will give the reader an overview of the training material as well as the curriculum utilized in carrying out the couple-to-couple mentorship.Chapter 5 provides a detailed evaluation demonstrating the results of the project implementation. The researcher related the research that supports the thesis statement through the results of the surveys taken by the newlywed couples. Chapter 6 is a summary section. The project seeks to determine the overall effectiveness of the curriculum in three key areas: grounding the community in understanding the significance of what it is to be “in Christ,” providing opportunities for small groups to cultivate a desire to both know and be known within the context of a trusted community, and finally to cultivate an environment wherein a burden of care is embraced and felt within said community. The research centers on qualitative interviews with participants in the Beta launch of the Community Foundations curriculum. The Beta launch occurred between Spring 2018 and Fall 2019. Three hypotheses geared around the key areas addressed above are presented and evaluated through the content of the recorded interviews. The research results indicate deeper and more sustainable relationships were cultivated through these small group experiences as well as a new appreciation for the value of shared story in the context of community."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Dallas Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["8322f611-a593-413a-8bcd-0011fba52dc7"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130958004486144,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:39:51.969Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:27:58Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:35:14Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"9b9c34d5-1615-4f23-a7d4-73581cf9a98e","accessControl_ssim":["8c2f3d63-3938-4b3a-a8bd-617cb45d10e4"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Evaluating a Biblical Program for Family Education in Cleansing Stream Ministries"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:27:58Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T02:40:59Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["71bcafa8-7b0e-4114-8cc1-c3c73e421cb2"],"hasLease_ssim":["9bdb8d7b-c03e-44ca-80d7-e7efd7d26fe8"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Educational Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Dallas Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Edward W. Las instituciones teológicas necesitan estar conscientes de la tendencia a la dicotomía entre el conocimiento teológico y la madurez espiritual en las facultades, y ante esta realidad deben buscar cómo implementar los factores que contribuyen a la integración entre ambos. Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1837354266895843328,"timestamp":"2025-07-11T12:39:34.478Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:25:58Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:20:08Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"45583d7a-9da1-46a3-9351-0862e9c9bb99","accessControl_ssim":["8872fb97-47d3-4079-af65-9d8bf9158e60"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["A Participatory Strength-Based Review of the Flexible Model of Training for Salvation Army Officers in the Finland and Estonia Territory"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:25:57Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T00:08:45Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["c8b60053-6f25-4a58-bc3a-6aaee5586ff3"],"hasLease_ssim":["3452189f-abfa-4a42-ba1c-bd591b02b9cc"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"discipline_tesim":["Leadership"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Tyndale University"],"advisor_tesim":["Michael Krause D.Min."],"year_tesim":["2021"],"location_tesim":["Finland","Estonia"],"resource_type_tesim":["Dissertation"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Geraldine Leah Lindholm"],"subject_tesim":["Organizational change","Christian education--Teaching methods","Bible. The passing years brought changes within The Salvation Army and in the surrounding culture that impacted the new training program. Surface cracks began to show as challenges arose in a number of areas: balance, supervision, curriculum and fellowship. The need to perform a comprehensive review of the flexible training model was evident. A participatory, strength-based review was conducted using, firstly, a focus group of five officers who shared their diverse experience of officer training. Secondly, an anonymous participant survey was sent out to all officers who had been trained in the flexible training model. Fifteen of the possible twenty-two responded, sharing their perception of the strengths and challenges of the flexible training model, and shared potential ways to make improvements. Eight important components related to a strong flexible training model were identified. These became the building blocks for a renewed flexible model of officer training through a three-year implementation plan. This portfolio was written as a journey, weaving my personal leadership development, biblical leadership models, contemporary leadership theory, and participant action research into a celebration of leadership development within The Salvation Army in the Finland and Estonia Territory."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Tyndale University"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["602e7e7c-0b8b-4e09-af87-84c66ff49c48"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791133496114151424,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:20:12.499Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":362,"label":"Unknown"},{"value":"D.Min.
