Modeled after ones created by well-known pastor Rick Warren, these seminars are called the Discipleship Path Seminars ('DPS').  The DPS consist of four, four-hour seminars that run simultaneously and are conducted semiannually.  The seminars are: 101-Membership--becoming a Christian and joining the church, 201-Maturity--cultivating habits of growth, 301-Ministry--discovering one's gifts and talents and using them to serve God, 401-Mission--learning how to share one's faith. The selected group received biblical and program materials as well as  instruction and encouragement for enlisting others to participate in an intercessory prayer group.  They also modeled prayer group sessions, which they personally lead, following participation in the workshop.  The workshop format utilized eight hours of training including and introductory session, six training sessions, and a final session addressing administration and the enlistment of participants. The author studies spiritual development, using the theories of Kegan, Erikson, Fowler, Gilligan, and Loder. The history and theology of the catechism that helped shape the identity of the German Reformed people was researched. The author developed a pedagogy, based on Howard Gardner's multiple intelligence theory, for teaching the catechism in the 21st century. A case study was developed based on a six week study of two churches in the United Church of Christ. The author made the following conclusions: 1) Howard Gardner's multiple intelligence theory, as pedagogy, offers different approaches to adults in various stages of their spiritual development. 2) Adults do not have an adequate concept of sin; as a result they are confused about how grace is operative in their lives; therefore, they do not know what it means to live a life of gratitude. 3) Without a strong identity, based on core documents of the faith, there is no congregational loyalty. He sought to accomplish this through eight one-hour, weekly training sessions, and a one-day prayer retreat.  The participants indicated that they grew in their understanding and practice of intercessory prayer.
