The study is based on qualitative research that included in-depth interviews with nine ministers in the Washington, DC area. It is supported by literature reviews related to transformational learning theory, a biblical case study from the life of Simon Peter, and findings from research that relate to pastoral ministry. Analysis revealed areas in which the ministers' understanding coincided with this theory. It also revealed gaps in their knowledge. The Gospel is nourishment the Christian needs for that change. Therefore, this project tested the effectiveness of a church-based program created to convince Christian adults that the gospel is for them, bring clarity to their definition of the gospel, and teach them how the gospel functions to make them more like Christ. The program consisted of sermons, small group discussion and daily devotional reading. In the course of the work on the seminar and delivery of it, the author spent time in Russia and in the United States consulting with pastors, academics and lay people who serve, or who work with the people of the United Methodist Church in the Eurasian Area. The project consisted of three training sessions, and a survey given to the fifty-one congregations of the Charlotte District in the WNCC. The pastor of a UMC congregation may have a clear understanding of his or her role, but rarely to the lay members have a similar understanding. Statistically, findings from this study suggested a positive effect of mentoring enrichment training on all outcomes.
