The project provides a means to overcome these obstacles through development of a workbook and a study course used with a focus group at Harmony Church in the fall of 1995. Fifteen newly elected deacons participated in in-depth training to gain better understanding of spiritual gifts and their use in deacon ministry, attending eleven classes as a part of the project.  The entire diaconate participated in a small portion of the project. The project involved academic study and research at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and Hardin-Simmons University. The new deacons fully participated in the Deacon Training Class and are using their spiritual gifts in ministry at Pioneer Drive. This project develops an introductory course for adults who are biblically illiterate. Most laypersons working with youth have had minimal training in youth ministry.  The project seeks to strengthen workers by encouraging them to discover and to develop their spiritual gifts, to recognize God's providential working for profitable ministry, and to realize certain basic concepts that are helpful for youth ministry. The project conducted a five-session training seminar, evaluating results with cognitive and affective survey materials. The project designed and implemented a teaching program, and nine adults completed the course. Participants who finished the course developed personal plans to integrate Christian faith with management of their material possessions. The training program included lectures, directed reading, discussion, practice exercises, assigned visits to various churches, and a rehearsal worship service planned and conducted by participants.  Project participants then planned, conducted, and evaluated Sunday morning worship for six weeks.  The project succeeded only in part, since some participants refused to lead public worship, insisting on involvement of members who had not participated in the project.
