In a qualitative study, participants in a group setting indicated their own needs for faith learning and collaborated with each other in facilitating group exploration of these issues. Many Christian college freshmen drop out of church involvement.  The project contains a notebook that deals with five key topics that will help prepare seniors for college.  These topics are world view, creation versus evolution, decision making, sexuality, and Christianity in the marketplace. The project was taught to and evaluated by youth ministers, high school seniors, and professional student workers. This was secondary, however, to the primary objective of learning inductively how to better understand, appreciate, and assimilate God's gracious gift of 'living forgiven.' The thesis follows the journey of a new church development congregation through the eyes of their former minister.  The research data was collected in three ways: questionnaire; interviews done by an objective interviewer; and personal recollections by the author.  This information was shared in the context of contemporary literature and theological reflection. A great number of people, however, are not being reached for Sunday school because they are not attracted to the traditional approach of many churches. The purpose of this project was to offer an alternative to the traditional class.  Working from the assumption that many people would be interested in Bible study without the pressure of studying quarterlies, reading in class, and answering questions, the author developed the class.  Two methods of study were employed in the development of the class: a study of current trends in evangelism and church growth was conducted; and, an in-house survey of current church members and a survey of the community were conducted. It was discovered during the process that a need existed for an alternative Sunday school class. A sample group of adults was trained in discipleship for the purpose of developing a discipleship program.  A pretest and posttest were used with the committee and a control group.  A survey revealed areas of interest in discipleship, and the committee developed a program based on the results.  The program was evaluated by church leadership and outside parties. The need is for believers not to look at themselves as solitary, isolated Christians, but as part of the Body of Christ.  The Bible primarily, other books and articles secondarily, were used to research the eight weekly group studies and the forty daily individual studies. These were designed to help new believers to mature in their understanding of the biblical admonition of responsible church membership. It was hoped that research would determine religious education would raise one's level of faith maturing and in effect bring about a higher level of church development.  A survey was conducted on twelve (12) subjects of the Third Mt Zion Baptist Church of Caroline County.  The subjects were evaluated through the use of two instruments: Margaret G Alter's Christian experience inventory, and Peter Benson's research project on faith maturity.  The research hypothesis explored the differences between horizontal and vertical faith, and the Christian experience inventory. However, the CEI instrument proved to be more helpful in measuring faith maturity in five areas: trust in God, growth in faith, experience of cost of faith, concern for others, and justification of faith. There were four phases to the project.  Phase one consisted of researching three areas of theology to be taught: bibliology, theology proper, and Christology.  In phase two a non-technical textbook was written along with twenty-five lesson outlines.  A test group of ten people met for twenty-five teaching sessions using the written textbook to supplement the classroom lessons in phase three. The fourth phase consisted of testing and evaluating this approach of teaching theology.  A posttest score greater than a pretest score was viewed as an increase in cognitive knowledge.
