This project seeks to understand how insights from adult educational theory, a passionate and biblical proclamation of God's grace, and the witness of a few representatives of a community might help new participants enter into the life of the church. Using transformational learning theory, a learning model is developed to help prospective members discover or deepen their understanding of God's grace. This project explores how a congregation of today might recover the catechumenate, a dynamic pattern of catechesis and formation that accompanies baptism and profession of faith for adults. Because this ministry depends on both laity and clergy participation, a model proposed by Daniel Benedict is used with current members of a local congregation in order to experience the shape and feel of such a ministry. The issues are the appropriateness and effectiveness of these efforts. This study intends to analyze the current needs of the house churches in China in order to improve the effectiveness of their leadership development, particularly for the Christian Ministry Institute (CMI). Instruction included three introductory sessions and five implementation sessions based on Colossians 3:1-17. The first three sessions were an introduction to VIM, hearing God, and an inductive study of Christ in Colossians.  Implementation sessions included heavenly mindedness, sexual sins, social sins, Christlike graces, and spirit-controlled living. Participant response showed a greater or lesser benefit depending on willingness and ability to apply the learnings. Research showed that the institute was succeeding in teaching biblical knowledge. It did not succeed in motivating people to greater service in church or community. The director led a six member team through a four-part teaching series.  Based on the information gained in class the team planned two sample ministry events focused on two age groups. This project brought together sixteen individuals in ten weekly sessions of training in and practicing of lectio divina. Although lectio divina worked as expected, the discovery of the overwhelming need among this group for community proved to be an unexpected asset in the quest for renewed spiritual vitality.
