The training model consisted of eight sessions of one hour to one and one-half hours in length.  The first five sessions were part of a one-day retreat.  The three remaining sessions were conducted in single sessions over the next two months.  The sessions focused on the scriptural basis of deacon ministry, the role of deacon as minister, the use of spiritual gifts in deacon ministry, and the formulation of deacon ministry teams.  The project goals were to research the skills needed to minister using deacon ministry skills, to develop a program for equipping deacons to minister using deacon ministry teams, and to equip the deacons to minister using deacon ministry teams. Project participants took a pre-test to determine the level of their knowledge of deacon ministry, their understanding of the biblical qualities of a deacon's life, and their comfort level if they were to be chosen as a deacon. The curriculum was developed based on the words of Jesus, 'Follow me and I will make you become fishers of men' (Mk. 1:17 NAS).  The selected believers participated in the developed six-week discipleship study that contained two weeks on following Jesus, two weeks on Jesus' conforming the believer and two weeks on the Christian's responsibility in soul winning.  The study included group meetings followed by daily, individual lessons, Monday through Friday.  The participants were evaluated before, during, and after the study. The project director utilized the ministry-skill enhancement model.  Six doctrinal surveys were completed by the participants prior to a six-part doctrinal sermon series. The author compared a control group of Maasai pastors and the respective congregations studying the Theological Education by Extension (TEE) textbook of 1 Corinthians with a test group of Maasai pastors and their respective congregations learning the text by the narrative paradigm (storying). The test group outperformed the control group in tangible oral tests derived from the TEE textbook over a ten week period.
