Attention is given to the need for intentionality in teaching and nurturing believers in the church.  Notice is given to the role of the pastor as teacher and disciple, spiritual growth and the biblical mandate for the people of God and the institutional church of God, and spiritual growth and the accountability of such in the church.  The practicum involved the participation of several groups of Tenth District AMEC.  The Sealy Circuit participated in a twelve-week Bible study series, 'Radical Christian Living,' clergy of the Tenth District participated in surveys and some in a four-week covenant group charged with developing a definition of 'spiritual maturity' and in describing the characteristics of a spiritually mature congregation. Known as 'Walking in the Kingdom,' the practicum was divided into three phases: inquiry, catechumenal instruction, and mystagogia.  Participants included those who sought baptism, and/or reaffirmation of faith, confirmation, or reception into the Episcopal Church. How will the church respond to the needs of this ever-increasing population, or should it?  The intent of this project is two-fold.  First, to contribute a launching point for those who wish to begin a program.  Second, to provide recommendations for the varied possibilities in curriculum and religious education of adults with mental disabilities in the local parish.  A study was made of the literature available concerning the theological underpinnings, curriculum and current programs. This project report describes a course called 'Owning Our Faith,' which was one attempt to provide such an opportunity.  A group of 12 'pilgrims' looked at faith development theories and what it means to become a mature person of faith, shared spiritual autobiographies, engaged in self-discovery through the Myers Briggs Type indicator, explored new mission opportunities, developed our own patterns of prayer, and clarified assumptions about how to study the Bible. This resource utilized the educational theories of Thomas Groome and John Westerhoff.  The dissertation describes the situational context and problem, theology of sacraments and baptism, educational theory, basic theological and educational assumptions and methods, educational program, culminating worship service, and evaluation.  The outcome of the program was a resounding success.  The theories and design were validated. Sixteen lay leaders participated in a four-week training course in spiritual development, followed by four weeks of trial ministry. This systematic emphasis on spiritual growth was rooted in traditions of spiritual direction, biblical mandates to seek God and exercise the spirit, and the affirmation that Christians live as members of gathering, witnessing communities. Seven individuals were trained to teach in three designated religious groups.  Jehovah's Witnesses, Mormonism and the New Age movement were studied through lectures, field trips, audiovisual materials, private research and personal interviews.  The seven individuals trained seventy others within the context of two Associational Interfaith Witness conferences. The action in ministry was an eleven-week course called 'The Lord's Prayer As Vocation.' Eight young adult members of Trinity Old Lutheran Church (Eggertsville, NY), four men and four women, participated.
