Every Christian is called to enter into the church for the purpose of serving Christ in the world.  But there is a gap between the calling and the fulfillment of the calling which can only be filled by intentional education for discipleship. Praxis education methodologies help fill this gap between calling and fulfillment.  Using a core committee, a praxis education experience was designed and implemented in an attempt to provide an alternative to teacher/curriculum centered education in the local church. Their changes were compared with pre- and post-test questionnaires to the changes demonstrated by a random sample group from the congregation.  The program included components of mutual selection and commitment, building of community, voluntarily chosen disciplines, a body of content, use of action and reflection, integration of body, mind and spirit; and the use of time. The intention of this program was that accountability to discipleship can be responsibly addressed within the pluralistic context of First Baptist Church, Dayton, Ohio, a downtown church. This program was implemented by developing an 'Adult Discipleship Plan' for the church; offering small discipleship bi-weekly groups for nine months, one overnight retreat, and a training event for church decision-makers; and relating worship themes. This action-reflection project with 19 members of St Paul's United Church was designed to animate lay people within a supportive environment to explore an opportunity for ministry.  Utilizing the Structuralist method of biblical interpretation, T H Groome's praxis method of theological reflection, and papers and exercises on the history and faith of the church, participants explored and wrote personal statements of faith concerning their ministry.  They then identified their gifts and analyzed them according to skills, which were then categorized by priority.  The third section explored personal mission through study papers and a pairing exercise to identify the specific context and meaning of ministry. The Study Guide designed by the author for this project report was used in a group of eight persons.  The Study Guide was structured to assist the participants in a learning process towards growth.  It was a learning process that merged the cognitive (empirical knowledge of six selected Psalms) with the affective (the participant's feelings while responding to the emotional utterances of the psalmist).  It was a learning experience that proved to be different for most of the participants in that it was a spiritual growth experience. The author suggests that the popular understanding within certain evangelical quarters of present experiential sanctification as being a struggle-free activity necessitating little or no human effort is erroneous, and that Christians possessing such an understanding can be guided effectively to a more biblical perspective through a carefully designed and implemented course of instruction.
